THJ, Holmes and Mcgee are dead money and make more combined than Ayton over the next 2 years. It would be huge value over the next 2 years to swap those guys for Ayton. Even if Ayton is a fraud like we think, it’s still smart business
In regard to the 3rd year of Ayton……when is a $30 million expiring contract ever a bad thing? If Ayton is a bust then boom, we have the expiring contract needed to go big game hunting
Not dead money. Productive or somewhat productive players/contracts.
Having a $30m fraud is a really bad thing for roster construction, regardless of whether it’s the final year or not. You’re stuck trying to trade his highly negative contract for some other team’s highly negative contract.

This is the EXACT mentality we need from a big man in this offense. I also doubt this is something Ayton has ever said in his entire career.

It's a bit odd how completely divorced the Mavs are from both McGee and Hardaway now. It's obvious to everyone that neither are wanted by the organization, and yet there's not a single indication on just where or how these two contracts get moved other than message board speculation.
So either there's some very quiet, and very good behind-the-scenes talks or.... the Mavs organization is just praying for something to appear. Or perhaps, more likely, a bit of both.

Thybulle doesn’t seem to fit the Blazers’ new plan, and sources have told me they are confident Portland won’t match.
Interestingly, he also speculates about whether Mavs might have to include Green in a deal for Center (Ayton as the example) as his upcoming extension would put them in 2nd apron territory.

I would be very unhappy with sending Green out for Ayton just to avoid 2nd apron a year from now. Couldn't that be avoided by simply paying a cap team a few seconds to take on Holmes expiring next offseason?

At least Mavs can quickly move on. MLE doesn't really make much sense now. I wonder if they pivot to sign some meh back-up plan option like Jones Jr. or rather use the remaining flexibility in a trade.

Not surprising. I’m sure the Mavs still have some moves to make. They no longer have an absolute whole in the roster, so they can be judicious. And, I like the Jones Jr. idea. He can give you 10-15 pretty good athletic minutes and guard multiple positions. Can’t really shoot though.

I guess that's it for MT? (if POR did indeed match) Can they match to turn it into a SnT scenario?
Does the focus now switch to trades with Charlotte or PHX?

I like this new RFA rule. Now try Reed next. Maybe Morey accept a McGee trade for two 2nd rounders.

I'd argue they still have a pretty big hole at the starting center position, but they can probably make the patchwork crew they have now work if necessary.

I think that once they officially match them they can't trade him for a year, but somebody will probably correct me on that.

I am relieved, honestly. Didn’t hate the offer with a passion, but I really think it was gonna be difficult to keep Thybulle on the court in the playoffs.

Stein: “Even if the Mavs pull off both Grant Williams an Thybulle, YES they will still try to upgrade at center. They have to.”

Maybe they have a backup FA option like Oubre or Ayo. But I could also see them pivoting to trades where they take back more money than they send out. They have a lot more flexibility without spending every dollar under the apron.

I am fine with this. Although doesn't Portland know you aren't suppose to interrupt when Nico is cooking?
To be honest, I didn't think that number put enough pain in Portland not to match. 11 million gamble that he can be a average shooter is not much imo. Their Portland fans were sort on a rampage anyway with all the Dame news. They are pretty excitable right now. Whether it was the right business decision or not, they would have made this into a bigger deal if they didn't match. So, gamble on the shooting being a swing skill and maybe it turns into a slight positive or even asset.
For Dallas, I don't think Oubre fits what we are looking for. Maybe Jones Jr. May be able to play with the rest of our front court players. But not an MLE offer. I may look other places.
Heck, if we got a rim protecting center without giving up Hardaway, Maybe Tim can play 20 minutes a night at SF. Seems unlikely though.

They must really be convinced that Holmes is hot garbage. I had him legit pegged as the placeholder center, but all reports show them trying to dump him. I don't get it. It seems like his strongest aspect - PNR offense - fits like a glove with Luka and Kai.
Zubac. Allen if Nico can really hit the home run.

Split the MLE between SF Oubre and SG/SF Mykhailiuk and worry about defense later. If there is nothing there for defensive purposes, don´t force the issue, go for the most upside and re-trade value.
Or go for Paul Reed as the McGee replacement and try to trade for a wing defender rather than a C. Don´t ask who, no idea.
