Still think the Suns roster is a bit awkward, but in terms of talent sure Gordon was a good signing.
I’ve heard they’re also signing Steve Nash and Karl Malone to 1-year deals.

The Mavericks, league sources, have interest in two restricted free agents as they seek to address their significant need for a good defender on the wing: Portland's Matisse Thybulle and Boston's Grant Williams.
The Rockets, I’m told, had interest in signing Powell before pivoting to the former Suns center Jock Landale.
If Landale got $8mm and Houston ‘pivoted’ to him after trying to get Powell, does that mean Powell turned down $8mm?
Williams and Thybulle make some sense. Neither is old by any means, so they could be around for a while. Are they available for the MLE? Do they require more? As I’ve illustrated, easy to get to $17mm area with just McGee as the outgoing. Taking McGee’s salary would seem problematic for Boston. FG mentioned sending cash with McGee to pay some of the difference between his salary and a minimum slot. That seems a more likely strategy for Thybulle.

Nuggets
Lakers
Suns
Warriors
Grizzlies
Kings
Clippers (always health permitting + maybe Harden)
are all clearly much better than the Mavs right now.
Mavs in a group with OKC, Utah, MIN fighting for play in.

I feel like both those RFAs make sense and can be had for the MLE. Thybulle at the MLE is an overpay and I don’t see Boston spending money on Williams (I believe stein said something similar).
Curious how the board feels about one of those player vs the other. I love Thybulle and we got an Aussie thing going already but Williams is probably a better fit because his size although at the end of the day you’re probably asking either to guard the same guys.
Either one plus a trade for a center with the scraps (Nurk is starting to make a lot of sense) is a good offseason but still not easy to pull off.

Williams seems like a better fit if you want to pencil someone into the starting lineup.
Thybulle is a better defender if you want someone to guard KD, Kawhi, and Lebron.
Tough choice.

For the record, Thybulle started all 22 games with Portland and shot 38% from deep on like 4 shots a game I believe. Wonder if that’s a mirage or if he can scale that out to a full season.
The Exum/Thybulle/Green minutes would be a fun little Australian prison for offenses for small stretches.

OKC won't be in that group long, maybe take a jump this year. They get Chet Holmgren back to add to their young talented core. They're on the comeup.

Which contracts do you think have been the worst in the NBA during this free agency season?
The ones I believe will be most regrettable:
Max Strus- 4 year- $63 million (twice what I would have predicted)
Dillon Brooks 4 year- $80 million (decent player but seems mentally ill. I thought he would get the MLE)
Dennis Schroeder 2 year- $26 million (Toronto was desperate so overspent for a name. This is what the Mavs usually do)
Jeff Green- 1 year- $6 million (anything more than the minimum is charity)
Jerami Grant- 5 year- $160 million (solid starter making more than a lot of All-Stars)
Which do you think were the worst free agency contracts thus far?
Bane 5/$207m
Sabonis 5/$217m
Lopez 2/$48m
Russell 2/$37m

There are only so many right pieces out there. So you can go year after year skipping what could be the right pieces because they look too expensive, signing what are not the right pieces at market deals. Or you actually pull the trigger at some point.
The question for me is not so much the price/salary, but if a player is the right piece.
I think the players that would have been the right piece were out of our budget. I think Bruce Brown would have been great but he got a huge contract with Indiana. Dillon Brooks would have been a decent pickup for the MLE but he went for $20 million per year.
I am envious of the Lakers and the Suns who picked up quality rotation pieces on cheap (often minimum) contracts. I like Josh Okogie, Yuta Watanabe and Taurean Prince. I wish the Mavs would have offered one of them part of the MLE and I think we'd be in a better position today.
Those would all be backups though. As of today, the price of an adequate starter in free agency is more than the MLE.

What is Stein track record this summer?
Feels he talked the most about interest, trade talks etc but I don't remember him breaking any deal that happened.
Mavs having interest in RFA seems like something you can just guess and not an insider info.
I know he is connected to Mavs for years but I am just skeptical.

I think the Timberwolves will be better. OKC will be better. The Pelicans are a great team if Zion plays 60 games.
I think we're fighting for somewhere between the 6th seed and the 11th right now.
I do look forward to seeing more Kyrie and Luka together and look forward to watching Jaden Hardy and our rookies grow.

Good news. Hopefully Morris and Pinson find a new home as well. Don´t even give the Mavs the option to bring them back.

I have been wondering the same thing. This is not a slight on Stein reporting either. Just wondering if this is more educated guesses or intel from others teams or really from the mavs? It feels like the mavs are super tight lipped this year. I don’t think any of their moves leaked ahead of time.
Again not a slight at Stein but maybe we should take these reports as gospel.
Although, his reports do appear to suggest they don’t view Holmes as an answer. In a previous post he mentioned they thought they could use Hardaway to find a center. I am having trouble finding who that center could be. Any suggestions?

I don't think Thybulle is worth more than MLE (even full MLE might be a lot). Williams thinks he is worth more, but I am not sure he really is.
In any case, I don't think Boston or Portland would be willing to eat McGee and help us get their player. They would want some compensation, and the only thing Mavs could offer really is the 2030 SRP. Is that enough for the help and for taking McGee? I am not sure. That is why I find it far more likely that the deal is done for max MLE amount with no salary going to either Portland or Boston.

Agree. Brown was out of reach as SnT was not an option. Although I am a bit bummed, that he was reported to be the No1 Mavs target yet it seemed he had Mavs only as his third option after Indy and Lakers.
I like Brooks, but I think he is in the similar quality class as Thybulle or G.Williams. So I am fine if Mavs didn't get him (SnT could be an option), if they can actually get one of those two.
