I think Bertans is out so will give Kidd a pass on that one. Just need a better play design. Pinson can shoot the three. He should have threatened it to open up some space. Overall, The Mavs defensive struggles are probably a given. But they just have to get some rebounds. Powell has 3 I think in the last two games combined. That makes him practically unplayable. Kidd put Wood in the dog house even before day 1. That was a mistake; a sort of organizational disfunction. Outside of Luka, he’s the only plus rebounder in the rotation (though Kyrie made a good effort tonight).

Kyrie said that play was drawn up to be a quick 2. I don't see how that would have ever worked.

game felt like a win despite the score board. we were down by a huge margin half time and it looked like a blowout then. nonetheless, our boys in blue never gave up. they lost the game which was a pity in a way but they ain't let the fans down. ticket price rose and fans don't pay extra cash to see blowouts. at least guys showed energy and spirit in 2nd half and gave us hope.

Of course it's always somebody else's fault.
Kidd's not accountable for his abysmal coaching.
I bet he could have easily shouted "PLAY CLEAN D", or "DO NOT FOUL". It would get the message across.

Kidd didn't draw up any play.
There is no evidence of him doing any of that for his whole coaching career.
Pretty sure as a player, one of the things that made him contentious to deal with for coaches (especially Rick), was that he didn't want plays called for him a lot of the time, he wanted to freelance it. Looks like it's transferred over to his coaching.

The “no big” lineup was our best lineup. Very little faith in our bigs. None of them could stop anyone so why not. The season really hinges on Maxi Kleber’s hamstring
Luka must adapt. He looks so silly crying to the refs while the other 9 players are on the other half of the court playing basketball. Luka cannot take defensive possessions off and really needs to focus and be a plus on that end. The slo-mo pace needs to end and only break it out when game script dictates that is needed
Kyrie was phenomenal in the 4th. The team looks better when he’s on the court and Luka is off.
Overall I’m fine with the loss. These struggles should make Luka question himself. We will keep growing as a team
This was more like what will happen in the playoffs when the bigs get played off the court. My biggest concern is we need a body to play small ball 5 when Maxi is out. And we already used our roster spot

Nice take. It is concerning we are counting so much on Maxi. It just feels like in the playoffs our weaknesses will be even more exposed. It is one of the reasons DFS was undervalued. He could guard bigger players. We seem like we have no answers right now. Not saying you don't trade DFS for a guy you think is a star, but I fear the things DFS did will become more apparent now that he is gone.
It is pretty amazing we were able to have such a solid defense last year. I feel like Kidd is trying to recreate the magic by playing the guys who were a part of the defensive intensity last year. It just isn't there this year.

Does Kidd knows he still has Frank?
Luka/Frank was +29.4 in 8 min with good defense ...
Green/Frank was +24.3 in 8 min with great defense at 94.4 DefRtg
Kyrie / Frank +45 in 11 with 95 DefRtg
His lack of playing time is disturbing if no defense is displayed on the floor. The moment Green/Frank is on the floor, you usually have decent defense.

Would much rather see Frank than Pinson. The only thing I can come up with for Pinson's newfound playing time is that he is really good friends with Kyrie? Trying to make Kyrie happy that his friend plays ball with him? I don't know what else to say.

I would argue that Luka didn't fall asleep. He was guarding a possible pass to two players as Green was helping in the paint.

Hm. Pinson was +12 in 19 minutes and FN was +6 in 13. One could argue team perfomed well when either of them was on the court. Both played most of their minutes in the fourth quarter

I don't think Pinson has been that bad. I just don't think he is a playoff rotation piece.
He is billed as a really smart player who does a lot of the glue things. While he has made a few threes, that is his weak spot. It is probably the reason why he is a fringe NBA player.
The Mavs problem is they have about 8 of these players where it is a role of the dice if they are going to be productive when their name is called. How do you know though? It is a giant guessing game. Pick right and you know what you are doing. Pick wrong and you have no idea what they heck you are doing.

I think it was very obvious immediately trade was made that Mavs will have problems on defense. Who knows why they didn't or couldn't address it at TDL. Team as it is is not a contender, imho. So, most likely they will win some games and lose some, end up somewhere 4-6 probably and not have a very long playoff run.

None of the other teams in the west are all that great either. We’re in the middle of changing the way we play so i think there will be improvements

Offense is not a problem, even as it is. Defense is. First games after the trade were full of energy, probably caused by the changes. That is why they played better. The energy was not there last two games. Also to note (as I posted previously), opponents in those first three games after the trade had really bad shooting nights, while Mavs were great. I don't see how they could improve on defense. Maxi will hopefully help some, but I don't think it is enough. Last two games was just a lay-up line for opponents. Fox and Edwards were basically doing whatever they wanted, got to their spots without any problems.

I agree with this part. That is why I think they will remain somewhere in the 4-6 position.

Not trying to pick on Wood since some of these mistakes clearly involve a mistake by Luka too, but Wood is out of position in multiple clips, whether it's leaving a corner shooter or the last play where he leaves Prince to drop down and pick up Ant on the baseline. Luka is just standing around so not helping but Wood is improvising and that is likely a huge part of the problem on defense. No communication, no defensive principals, guys doing nothing and others running around doing their own thing.

I honestly think they should consider going super small with Luka at center in the play-offs as their go-to line-up, similar to the Warriors with Draymond. Luka is our best rebounder. He´s just as big and stronger than Wood, McGee and Powell, if not as tall. No center is going to overpower him. Also most lack the skills to punish a smaller player one on one, especially when you have four smaller guys trying to steal the ball in a swarming defensive set-up. Putting Luka at C allows us to push the pace more.

That´s probably the best option right now. The defensive problems start on the perimeter and inserting bigs into the lineup won´t solve that. If the Mavs have enough quick guys on the floor they have a chance to stay in front of their matchups. Can make quick rotations. Can prevent penetration.
With Powell, Wood and McGee playing center the Mavs gave up 33, 32, 35 in the first three quarters. With a Luka/Frank/Pinson frontcourt the Mavs gave up 24 in the 4th quarter. Played Gobert off the floor and forced the T`Wolves to go small as well.
