The Mavs did not know for 100% certainty JB was gone at the TDL.
Tim MacMahon said at the time the Mavs had a huge sigh of relief that the Knicks did not clear any cap space at the TDL. Why would they be satisfied about that? They thought their chances to retain JB increased at that point.
All signs pointed to DAL wanting to bring JB back, priority #1 and all that. But the playoff emergence increasing his price, Cuban being on a Lux Tax budget, and overall disrespect made that possibility vanish.

Not with 100% certainty, no.
I think what we're learning is that they've been worried about this outcome since before then, even.
Doesn't let them off the hook.

"ALL SEASON" JB was aiming to play in NYK. Another piece of the pie.

The Mavs NEVER offered an extension at any point to JB because they would have lost the ability to trade him.

With every signing, JB’s contract looks more like a value. He’s a good player. The Mavs tried to downplay his value, trade him, and then give him a lowball offer, even after proclaiming they’re confident of signing him because they can pay the most. All bluster. The Mavs don’t have what it takes to win high stakes free agency. Winning there requires straight out aggression and force. You come at your player big out of the gate. There’s no room for finesse. The Mavs are just a passive, take what the market gives them organization, more like scavengers than hunters.

I agree with this.
For all the talk that Cuban should thrive in an environment when he gets in front of players or negotiate against other teams, time and time again he shows that he is in over his head. You would think this is where he could really hit it out of the park. Just doesn't have "IT" though. I guess typically you look for the "mark" you can take advantage of in these conversations. Ours just happens to be named Mark.

Also he sold us Nico as this special charismatic player recruiter. If you put a mic in front of Nico, I´m falling asleep in 10 seconds. He´s a more boring, emotionless and empty talker than Donnie Nelson ever was, which was the problem Cuban identified in our free agency failures.
In the end Cuban is still failing to recognize the one true issue. Top players judge franchises simply based on their body of work, plans and visions.
The one constant front office figure in this case is usually the owner.
Since Cuban simply refuses to change his approach, so do the top players, when it comes to free agency.
That´s the bottom line.

I would love to learn who the Mavs had eyes for in a Jalen trade prior to his decision not to sign a 4/55 million dollar offer. Was there something there or was is it all fantasy land?
Another reason I hate seeing Jalen leave it is puts the idea in Luka's mind that a brighter future lies elsewhere. Now, I think all players know they can leave via FA or demand trades (if they are at a certain level), but now Luka can see clearly what happens if Brunson and the Knicks find improved success. Seeing one of your guys move on and find success is something the Mavs will need to be aware of. Especially if the Mavs have less success this upcoming season.

Kamm. this actually shows the Mavs in poor light even though you are using at as something against the Brunson camp.
That’s why I said in one of the posts that it would have been easy to call Rick Brunson’s bluff if the Mavs had just gone ahead and made a formal offer at multiple stages during the season. What was the harm in that? Agents have to do their thing and say that they will negotiate later. However GMs have to do their thing too and make formal offers so that the other side can’t say these types of things later.
The fact that the Mavs didn’t do that does lend a bit of credence to the stories that they were trying to keep their trade options open. So you continuing to rail at the Brunson camp as if all the fault was with them comes across as not keeping an unbiased mind and quickly jumping to just agree with the narratives put out by the Mavs.

I don't have an agenda against Brunson's camp OR for the Mavs.
Yes, this shows the Mavs in a poor light and their mistake.
It is another piece of evidence. That's what I care about. I want the truth, not agendas.
