This is my stance and has been since last summer. Hence I have been on the "trade JB" wagon for almost 12 months.

Yeah the Mavs lost by 20 but if you look at ShotQuality they should have only lost by 17, that's a win in my book.

Mavs have no choice but to keep him, even if it means overpaying.

What in the hell is the path forward for this roster??
Could have had JB on a value contract and didn’t do it so you could maybe trade him…didn’t trade him…now have to massively overpay him. Typical Cuban garbage asset management.
Stuck in multi year deals with Boban, Burke and Brown….three guys who don’t play.
An almost impossibly bad 2020 draft night.
For this roster to look like other contending rosters it would need to look something like this:
Starters: Luka, DFS, Bullock
2nd Unit: Brunson, Dinwiddie, Maxi, THJ
Depth: Powell, Green, Bertans
Maybe Powell and Green work as true second unit guys. But at a minimum you need a scorer/creator in the starting lineup with Luka along with a Big.
The biggest issue…look at the money tied up (and about to be tied up) in the guys that fall outside of the starters. You have no real assets to fill those other two starting spots and you can’t have that much money sitting on your bench.
Someone in the game thread mentioned worrying about this roster heading toward where the Jazz are now….that’s a scary and realistic thought.
Call this a knee jerk reaction to getting your pants pulled down by the best team in the league…but of the 8 teams left…the Mavs are a distant 8th in roster quality.

I mean they DO have the choice to facilitate a sign and trade....BUT I think the right path is sign him this summer and trade at the next available opportunity.

Of the Western Conference play-in/playoff teams, we are very near the bottom.

S&T would be a minimal return.

Mavs drafting Green instead of Bane is going to haunt them for a long time.

True!
Not the time to have the conversation…but a player like Luka having this series and whatever happens in the future laid at his feet is what leads to situations that we’ve seen with AD, Harden, etc.
The narrative won’t be about what a joke of a roster Cuban built…it will always be about Luka.

Well if they had signed him to that cheap extension, they´d have a major trade asset right now. As it stand they´ll have to overpay him, which will make trading him more difficult and lock the team into a 2nd round ceiling for the next 2-3 years. And if you consider the Nuggets and Clippers as potential healthy juggernauts, that would be a major achievement. Let´s not even think about the Pelicans with a healthy Zion and McCollum or the internal growth of the youthful Grizzlies and Wolves.

Barkley talking about how Luka needs to learn how to play off the ball like CP3. It helps when you have a Top-5 SG, Top-5 C, and one of the best all-around forwards
Brunson and Dinwiddie aren't going to make the Suns pay and at this point, it seems like both teams realize it. Both of them are getting the KP treatment from last year's playoffs where they can only be trusted to play primarily off-ball

That draft night as a whole is a franchise changing failure.
Not inking JB to an extension will follow close behind. They don’t understand asset management at all. JB on the DFS contract is a big piece in a trade. JB on the contract they are going to have to give him….not so much.
Cuban must have some great money guys on his payroll because of his roster decision making is any indication of his asset management acumen he would be broke.

We might be lucky to get into the second round moving forward.

Bane playing with a busted back in round 2 is still 8,000x better than Josh.

This. Thinking about the future Pels and Grizz with youth and depth is scary.

How? You can’t strip something for parts of the parts are broken.

Yea. Except for somehow finding Luka the Mavs have been kind of idiots managing their personnel.

Don't resign JB. If you trade what assets you have in Maxi, DFS, Dinwiddie, THJ, look for expiring contracts and picks. Limp along next season to a lower seed. Bottom out the following year(s). Powell, Maxi, Boban, Burke, Brown, Frank and Chriss all expire next year. Hope Luka stays along for the ride.
KP was a franchise altering miss and we dug the hole deeper by trading him again. Rebuilding isn't going to be accomplished in a season. JB and Luka as your core just enough. The only good moves the Mavs have made since drafting JB is singing Seth and Bullock.

Even with Luka the Mavs stupidly traded a pick instead of taking on a bad contract for like 2 years.

I’m this series, Luka probably does need to go off ball and just focus on scoring and rebounding. No need to wear him out bringing the ball up. He just needs to let it fly.

Let's see Luka's shooting numbers on catch and shoot versus off the bounce.
