Says that it may not get to the deadline, Toronto is just in no rush. Dallas’s package had Dwight Powell at the center of it.

Everyone is getting a buyout (Batum, Drummond, Griffin, Aldridge) but now that the Mavs need one it is not happening.

lol so Dragic is the only old veteran guy not being bought on from a lottery team?  Man, who did Cuban piss off this time?  I remember two years ago when we almost got Dragic and somehow there was miscommunication.  What is it this time?

I'm fine with not giving up assets if he was bought out, but this is just bizarre.

If the last phrase is true, I don't want the treacherous bastard here anyway.

Ujiri didn't get where he is making questionable decisions. He's not giving Dragic away, and it'll take more than Dwight Powell to get him. If not, he'll sit on him until he finds a deal he likes. They could use Dragic anyway because they just have VanVleet and Malachi Flynn at the point.

Honestly, people are acting like the first they are requiring is because of what they believe is the value of Dragic. It is actually probably more about what they believe is the value of Powell. More accurately their perceived value of Dragic combined with the negative value of Powell.

I'd rather have Powell and our FRP.  Our hands are almost untied from the KP trade.  Powell should be easier to move next year when he's expiring and maybe, just maybe he returns to form this far removed from his injury.

Plus, someone said the other day that only $6M of his salary next season is guaranteed. Not sure if that's true, but if it is that might even have some actual value (at that time).

Me too, but I don’t think it’s such an unreasonable request from them.

For sure if we’re gonna give up a1st, I’d much rather bring back someone like White (Sa’s or Chi) than Dragic!

Agreed.  I'd want a first take Powell.  I think people leaned to heavily on Canada connection.

He already did the questionable decision - that's the problem.
He didn't get the value to buyout Dragic from the Heat and thinks he can get someone else to eat the frog.

But everybody knows Dragic isn't worth 19 Mio and wants to play at Dallas so nobody has appetite.

He might think he will get something at the TDL but that quest will end like the Grizzlies one - endless drama to be even worse than just buy him out.

I totally agree with this. In doing Lowry a “favor” he got less than the full candy bar.

It’s a matter of perspective. Is Dragic an asset? Well that remains to be seen. If he behaves and he plays, he’s overpriced, but consists of some value. If someone comes along willing to give TOR a 1st, then Masai gets the full candy bar he wanted.

From Mavs perspective that 1st is too valuable to us. We need the ammo for later to make a bigger acquisition than Dragic. Possibly also true of our two 2nd year rookies.

We simply can’t pay the ransom. Maybe someone else will.
Thank you Donnie.

I tried to point this out a couple of days ago.  Dragic at $19mm can play and can be a big expiring deal at the TDL.  The other option is to pay $19mm and have neither of those things.  Even the play where Dragic takes a $9.5mm discount and signs here for the MLE means Toronto is spending $10mm for nothing.  Why not pay the $10mm spread for something.  They knew the position they were in when they agreed to the deal.  I don’t think they made a mistake.  But no one knows if the $19mm expiring deal will be useful until he can no longer be used as a trade chip or S&T chip (next summer).

Good point on the expiring feature. As we know so well in Mavs land this is an option that something good could happen, and something you wouldn’t give away for free if you are Masai.
Thank you Donnie.

They have no use for some semi-motivated vet.

I don't know what the plan is for the Raptors, but I don't think they will go for the playoffs.
And I don't think Dragic is already at his Vince-Carter-at-the-Hawks-stage of his career. They are a bad fit and something has to give.

The Mavs have nothing to trade for him and I'm not sure who else would.

I guess we will have to wait for after the Siakam trade.

The optionality I’m referring to is Toronto’s ability to attach their own young talent potentially with their own first round picks to Dragic’s expiring to get back a star player. The classic Mavs opportunistic expiring.

Or the more recent Presti ballast swap where Toronto takes back a longer contract in exchange for potentially 1st round picks.

Good news for Mavs, in both scenarios where Dragic is used as an expiring, it is PROBABLE that he would get bought out from the receiving team! In which case he could still be a Mav by the end of this season.
Thank you Donnie.

Probably true, but at some point, it won't matter. It will be too late.

That "who did we want, Olynyk or Dragic" train wreck last off-season was probably the time to add this player, if we're honest with ourselves.
