ATL wants to make the play-offs. AD wants an extension. Mavs just want a high draft pick. Who needs AD on the court to achieve those objectives? Not the Mavs. Negotiating position is still not good, but it´s better when Mavs make it clear they will tank this season and their actions/record reflect it. That being said Mavs need to go on a little tank run again to not lose sight of the achievable 7th best odds. Clippers and Hornets are the main enemies, though keep an eye on Memphis. They concern me a bit.

I get it. Tanking is very important.
But I was hoping to watch some decent basketball this year.

I thought he would be back in January. Bummer. It's possible this has some relation to tanking. Or maybe it doesn't. Very hard to read. One thing we don't know is what Kyrie looks like in practices. Or otherwise behind the scene. But the Mavs know. There could be a huge range of possibilities, as we know he has been doing drills already for months. The Mavs do need to get a handle on how the Flagg-AD-Kyrie team can compete. If Kyrie is NOT coming back before the TDL, does this mean their approach is "We must wait to see, unless you blow us away with your offer" or do they say "We might as well go ahead and trade AD and whoever else we can"? I'm guessing the former, but who knows. This also opens the door that if Kyrie is at some point totally shut down for the season, they keep AD but at some point shut him down too and go full youth development and tank. This is something we have seen with other teams who were tanking.

Question---if we can move Klay's contract for an expiring, that would drastically help our tax situation right?
What happens if you move him and get an expiring and someone making 8 million next year? Does that really help our tax situation?

The Mavs need to shed about 6m to get under A2 next year. Thats probably the bare minimum they will be chasing. I'm sure they would love to do more. Any trade they do should address that in some way. Perhaps DAR declines his option and opts to be a FA. That seems quite possible, and helpful. Your idea of Klay for an expiring and a pick would help the numbers, but I don't like that deal itself. Instead, I would search for a deal where Klay is packaged with Martin, Hardy, or DAR, because I'm generally NOT in favor of trading away useful talent to solve bad contracts while still keeping the bad contracts intact. If Klay is the lone outgoing, all you have done is lower your hard to find talent, without solving any of the real problem. If the Mavs could find a path to shed ALL of Martin, Hardy, and DAR, their remaining payroll would be very palatable. Might even be tax free.

Literally the only trade I can think of that will bring anything back to Dallas for Klay is Kuminga. That´s cause GS loves Klay and hates Kuminga. To every other team in the league Klay is a washed up 35 year old making 16.6M , averaging 11/2/1, shooting 37/36/71. Klay is where he belongs: The NBA retirement franchise. It was temporarily closed for business, but now we are back baby.

[Marc Stein] Imaging is scheduled for today to determined the severity of Anthony Davis’ hand injury sustained Thursday night in Utah, league sources say. The Mavericks are traveling to Chicago and Davis’ status for his annual homecoming game Saturday is not yet known.

Not to be left out, KP quickly makes it known that he is also a big man who disappoints franchises. Kristaps Porzingis (Achilles) downgraded to questionable Friday.

I doubt a non-shooting hand injury will be viewed as all that serious, relative to some of the other injuries he has sustained, but it's a decent excuse not to play him and that way he stays safe on the bench.

shams says ligament damage for AD. If Surgery is required, he could be out months. Seriously, this is good news.
Not a lower body injury, let the tank role on and revisit this offseason.

It potentially kills any TDL trade and if he does not come back the rest of the season it won't help summer deals either. I have no idea why the hell they played him if they were close to an Atlanta deal.

Still plenty of time to lose a bunch of games. Can you imagine the state of this franchise if they didn’t luck into Flagg. It would be the worst situation in the NBA. AD will be traded in the offseason as a pure salary dump. Mavs probably need to move on from Kyrie too. What a shit show.

If it ends up just being an excuse to hold him out of games until he gets to his new team, I can see that being a positive.

This is terrible news. Tanking would easily be doable if they werent too scared to make the call. But just like in the Cuban years they are indecisive.
Pro: This will help improve their most important asset on draft night Con: IF they can get expirings for AD next summer that is probably a GREAT return now. AD is horribly overpaid given that he cant even play more than five games in row without getting injured at this point of his career. |
