According to Timmah at ESPN Flagg and Klay are the two players with the worst plus/minus in the league. I´d say you are not winning the Championships, when two of your starters have the worst on-court impact in the whole league. Yikes. Luckily we did not offer Derrick Jones the full mid-level, currently shooting 66% from the field and 45% from three to trade for Klay.

We didn't even have to offer him the full MLE. He got 10 mil with the Clippers. All we had to do was not offer someone else his starting spot. I still contend this was the move that started the downward spiral (not surprisingly it was Nico first move after Linsey left and Cuban was pushed out). We let our best perimeter defender walk (who we have never replaced) for a guy we could have mostly replaced with the Timmy upgrade Grimes (who currently looks wildly better).

I don't think Davis is going to work now at the 4. I was really hoping it would. I still want to see it for 40 games though. This is an evaulation year and AD, Lively, PJ and Coop are your four best players. You need to find out if they can all play together. If not, AD is center and Lively is your 6th starter. I think you could sell this to Lively, especially with his injuries. At least for two years or so.
AD at PF is the big question. PJ at SF is also a big question. PJ looks good this year. He just has not made shots the last two games. I think teams are fine with him shooting from three. Ball handling is always iffy if he tries to do too much. It is an awkward fit if you are playing him at PF, with only two creators on the floor.
I give Klay less time. To be honest, I care very little about the older or short term players on this roster. The Mavs need Klay's shooting, but he is the wrong player to go with this starting lineup. It is a difficult conversation to have for a once great plaeyer. If you want to get a clear look at our best four players, I think you need a guard in the lineup I am not sure which guard I would pick. I am not a huge fan of any of them. I want to see more of Brandon Williams and I think in time Nembhard is going to eventually compete for some minutes.

I doubt you will see 40 games of AD at the 4 given the health of this frontcourt.

Don´t take it is a personal dig. I´m just sick and tired of people giving Nico and the owners this out.
It was a "we win the title"-year last year, this year and next year.
No evaluation this, if it goes right that. No this franchise traded Luka F´n Doncic for a bum and said we will win championships.
Now I don´t know whether I said it before or after the Luka trade, but I had my concerns that Miriam Adelson is the new Donald Sterling. She does not give a flying f*ck about basketball. And I believe she rates her son-in-law´s IQ at the amount of games the NBA season has. So she gave him a toy to play with, that she does not care about and that thanks to revenue sharing is pretty fail safe.
Unfortunately the previous owner´s partying gift of incompetence was to first hire a total moron as the GM, then sell the team to an owner that could not care less about basketball and handed the basketball operations to another one.
Now maybe at the end of the day Mrs. Adelson, Patrick Dumont and Nico Harrison all just made a smart business play, but I think Mavs fans need to understand the only thing worse than a bad owner that cares and fails repeatedly is an owner that does not give a f*** about the team winning.

Nico is not who you want making roster-building decisions.
The depressing part is that, if you think the Mavs need to make a trade or 3 to have a better roster, Nico will be the one evaluating what to do and negotiating with an expert GM on the other end (all of whom are eager to trade with him, in light of how he gets raped and will think he won, when he trades).
Unfortunately, the one person in the NBA world who is even dumber than Nico is Dumont, who is so stupid that he has let Nico convince him that the Luka trade and its outcome isn't even Nico's responsibility, but rather is Dumont's. Good grief.
Dumb and Dumber.

Pretty sure DLo leads the Mavs in plus minus, on/off, etc.

I think he means that since Kyrie tore his ACL shortly after the trade and is out at least half of the year this season, then it's hard to say the team is considered a contender at the moment. I don't think the Mavs are better with AD and Max, with Kyrie being the lead guard... but we have yet to see it. I think 99% of Mavs fans all agree that it was a terrible trade.

Are you just being nice trying not to ruffle any feathers or do you really think "we need to find out" if those 4 can play together?
There is no chance in hell those 4 can play together. I have no idea what this team is doing. We are wasting a year of everyone's life, including the fans. The Kidd quote about having a backcourt of Kyrie and Flagg makes me even more depressed.

Part of the Luka/Grimes trade were to acquire two injured players in AD/Martin, which then forced a burden on Kyrie that significantly contributed to him tearing his ACL. Kyrie was not build for that kind of physical responsibility. When the Mavs went to the finals Kyrie basically played a half per game. He was resting in the first half. Anyone with half a brain knew that Kyrie would crumble under that physical responsibility. If he did not get hurt, his legs would have been completely gone by the time of the play-offs.
You guys seriously expect Kyrie to just come back from an ACL tear at age 33 in record time and immediately average 30/10 to dig them out of at least 5-6 games under .500. Also what stops the other team from just throwing full court presses and double teams at Kyrie? All the other bricklayers on the Mavs.
This is already over.

Who are you guys? No, I don’t expect Kyrie to come back and average 30/10. I do think they’ll look a lot more competitive if/when Kyrie, AD, and Lively play. As a fan of the Mavs, I’d like to see it on the court at the very least.

So your bar is: If everybody is healthy we might be as good as the Grizzlies, Blazers and Kings.

No. I think if everyone were healthy they’d be one of the better teams in the West. No way to know for sure until we see it. If ever… Kyrie and Davis played 1 game together. Kyrie, Davis, and Lively have never shared the floor. I don’t think that was part of any vision.

Remember though Defense wins CHAMPIONSHIPS, so Klay over Jones Jr makes sense....wait....
Btw, Jones Jr shot 35.6% from three in 77 games on 2.8 attempts per game last year. I'd take that with his D

Quite the endorsement of CF from KD
It's so obvious. The dude is playing out of position, and even if we agree that's a good move in the long run (not sure I do, but it might be), we need to be patient as he literally reinvents his game on the highest level in basketball. I cannot believe folks here are turning on him already. If people expected him to be able to play PG competently right out of the gate...IN THE NBA...that says more about those people than it does about Flagg.

To generate paint points, you need an offensive system designed to have the ball touch the paint, and players in the right places with the right skills to execute that plan.
To keep the opponent's offense out of the paint, you need time for your defense to set up in an organized way, which is much easier to do consistently when your offense is successful.
In other words, defense doesn't win championships unless you have a good offense.
To answer your question, no, it is sadly not surprising in the least. It's very believable and quite depressing.

I just look at the stats of Giannis in his rookie season to keep everything in perspective. He was half a year older and ended the year with 6.8 points, 4.4 boards, 1.9 assists, 0.8 blocks, 0.8 steals on 41% shooting. With the exception of blocks that’s all the same or less than Cooper is averaging in his first weeks in the league with lots of opportunities to get better this season. And because Kidd forced Giannis to handle the ball he became the special player he is.
