"Shortcuts cut long runs short." - Sam Presti, 2021
I don't think I have ever heard a better way to explain my concern about the Mavs doing something for the short-term at the expense of a proper and patient build around Mr Flagg/Lively, etc.
********************
Agree. I think there is a chance Mavs can have a good to very good team with their current players. My concern is if they go aggressive with win now players who limit the future. I think there is a chance you try to win now but also keeping your powder dry for when AD and Kyrie age out. Although, Nico is going to want to be proven right....that is when it gets messy.
I think you’re right about Nico. He wants to be proven right: win now, and win in the future.

Cuban could not have sold the Mavs to a worse, more morally bankrupt person.

I know I’ve left these posts up but for the future, seriously, NO politics. Any side, view point, whatever. This is not the place to discuss it.
If you dislike the owners, ROTW is available to vent.
It’s already tumultuous enough as a Mav fan and we get political discussions anywhere and everywhere you breathe. So PSA in the future, any and all political posts will be removed.

I thought my statement was loose enough that the reasoning behind my hating them is ambiguous. I hear you tho.

If anyone has a right to hate the otherside its always the otherside of whatever side you are on. Confused yet? LOL

I feel like i'm in the minority, but I dont feel losing Sweeney will be that big of an impact.
Especially if we can get Vogel or another ex coach on the bench next to Kidd.
I thought many folks online were panicking too fast when the news came out.

Brad has sort of changed his story or hedged but the point remains. See three tweets from Bobby below.

If the Mavs move on from Gafford or PJ (or anyone else) this sumner, I want to see genuine compassion and appreciation with whoever is leaving. Over the last few years some good guys have left. Some have been really messy. Even the non messy ones there is something there. Very transactional. That is part of the job, but I think this organization needs to bring back some human touch. I am not sure if the GM is capable of this. Every team has messy breakups but it is way to common with this team the last few years.
Even non messy ones like Josh Green, Hardaway, curry, Grant Williams, etc there seems to be a bad feeling when they leave or comments or lack of comments afterwards.

Someone is missing….
Gafford averaged a career-high 12.3 points last season and will team with Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II and Cooper Flagg in the Mavericks frontcourt. Gafford ranked in the top-10 in field-goal defense as contesting defender in 2024-25 among players to contest 800 shots.

Good. Now Nico can't trade him.

a tad higher than I was expecting. Thought 17-18 million, but lets see if it was really 60 million. I thought he would be the odd man out. If he continues his good play, this is a movable contract for a guy who is in his prime. Probably more value than an expiring. There is risk there though in case of injury or poor play. It is going to be tough to keep PJ, I think. Although there were reports dallas wanted to keep both.

Stein says 3 years 54 mil. That is more in line what I was expecting. Interesting Shams article does not mention PJ. He was at the Mavs facilty last week.

AAV is about what I expected. I predicted 4/$72. This means he can't be traded for a few months, right?
I dunno about this team. On the one hand, AD and Lively are always hurt so it's nice to have him around. On the other hand, if everyone is healthy, I feel like this entire team will be playing out of position compared to how the current NBA works. AD should be a center. Flagg should be a 4. Klay should be a 3. Kyrie is a 2 on offense.

This is the maximum amount Daniel Gafford can extend for within the extend-and-trade limits.
He can get a 120 percent raise off his $14.4 million salary in 2025-26, which starts him at $17.3 million in 2026-27.
Then with 5 percent raises, it tops out at $54.3 million.

"As cap expert Yossi Gozlan tweets, Gafford should remain trade-eligible after signing the extension, since his new contract won’t exceed the extend-and-trade limits (20% first-year raise; 5% subsequent raises; four total years, including the current contract). If he were to receive more than $54.3MM on the three-year deal, he would be ineligible to be dealt for six months."

Interesting note: Gaff deal said to have 5% trade kicker.
That might make him untradeable by the Mavs until at least 2026-27 season because of hard cap limits, unless he waives it.

Seems like it would work like a defacto no-trade clause, giving him some say in where he might be traded.
