Bulkier than DJJ. Looking at the matchup data he is more of a true SF on defense. Good defender but not providing the same kind of POA defense that earned DJJ his starting spot.

This screams to me that Nico really thinks Grimes is our new premier POA defender. When he was with NYK, he always guarded the best opposing player. 99th percentile in terms of matchup difficulty. 

But he was too inconsistent shooting to get proper minutes.

2 thoughts:

1) this is reading to me like the Mavs don’t want to wait around for DJJ to be able to negotiate, not that they know he’s leaving.

2) but also, I bet they know this offer is lower than what he was going to want, and would’ve required a hard sell. In other words, they really are prioritizing giving Thompson too much money over bringing back their best defender.

I’m pretty bummed.

I do like Marshall, however. More offensively skilled than Jones, for sure. People who think they’re similar defensively…I don’t think so.

Grimes COULD be a starter. He started 66 games under Thibs and played 30 mins a game. That doesn't happen unless you are a good defender.

Grimes is also 6'5 205lbs compared to DJJ 6'5 210lbs.

He can handle the ball. That’s something people will like. 

Everything they’ve done so far has been done with improving the offense in mind.

Body type is more PJ. But he isn't as explosive and a little bit lighter.

The best version of Grimes is the perfect starter next to LuKai. Lot to prove.

We seem to forget that DJJ was buried in the bench and signed a 1 year min deal before getting run next to Luka and Kyrie.  I'm actually not that surprised that he may walk when I heard he signed with Lebron's agency.  He wants top dollar and I'm excited to see what Marshall will do with these open shots he's about to get.

maybe we can resign DJJ in two weeks on another minimum deal when/if he fails to attract any team satisfying him with the money he wants. at least playing one more year in Dallas will grant him early bird rights, but he would have to face the competition with Marshall and omax.
