Trade & Free Agency 2026/2027
(3 hours ago)Scott41theMavs Wrote: Yaxel differs in contract, but not that much in age!!!

It's over 4 years.  Less than it should be for a rookie, but that is still a lot.  And we are getting a first too?  This whole thread is dreamworld.

As a Mavs fan I would do that deal for draft capital.  Does not have to be Yaxel.  But it would have to be something like Dan suggested where PJ goes somewhere else as he doesn't make sense on GS current roster.

It might seem a bit crazy, but they've done weirder things before.

A complete reset, both financially and becoming more competitive for Steph's last push is probably very attractive for them.

They were shopping the pick and while Yaxel looked great, I don't think anyone thinks he's going to be a star.  A high quality role player sure, but not a star.

Warriors suddenly become very deep, and PJ+Gafford are tradeable guys for after steph too.

That’s like preparing your house for a dinner party but sweeping your dead cat’s putrid corpse into the corner and wondering what stinks.

That analogy particularly fits considering that he’s one of the final reminders of Nico’s atrocities.

Martin is for one more year after this.  He is an afterthought.  You don't kill deals because you want to dump the one bad contract on the books.  If they can turn a collection of vets into Yaxel you pull the trigger and be really happy about it.

I guarantee you one thing, they´ll trade Gafford/Washington/Martin for an expiring guard at some point. At this point I´m 99% convinced that their Plan A is Giannis or Jokic with Luka in 2028. And if it does not work the falllback will be continue youth development and go after guys like Herro, Barrett, Watson, Maturin etc. next summer.

Giannis 60M
Kyrie 27M (75/3 restructured)
Flagg 15M
Christie 12M
Marshall 12M
Risacher or Aldama 12M
Lively 10m (QO)
Johnson 7M
Sasser 3M
Biberovic 3M
DeLarrea 3M
Cisse 3M
Ishchenko 3M
Minimum contract 3M
169M

Cap 174M - 3M (dead money) = 171M

Lavine 16M (MLE)

Irving/DeLarrea/Sasser
Lavine/Christie/Ishchenko
Flagg/Risacher/Biberovic
Johnson/Marshall/Minimum
Giannis/Lively/Cisse

I think Dan had most of the outgoing draft capital going to NOP because of the inclusion of Martin.  I'd rather just try my luck at selling off PJ and Landlord individually if we are playing the draft capital game.

Curry is 38 and they've tried to reload around him. Eventually reality has to hit home. You'd probably need to send a pick their way in the purposed swap (especially if including Martin). Would you be on board if we included LA's 29 or our 30?

I think your confidence on either of those things being the case is way too high, especially plan A.

It's far more likely that NONE of those players (except Flagg/Johnson) are here in 2028, than it is them adding Giannis, Jokic, or Luka in 2028.

The only players absolutely on the books, even as soon as next season, are: PJW, Gafford, Flagg, Morez, and Sergio. Everyone else has options (Player/Team) or is a FA (Restricted/Unrestricted).

Exactly. All their moves are build around cap space threat as early as 2027 not just 2028. In the process they will try to rehab the value of multiple young players to either keep or trade. You finally see a FO operating far beyond the capabilities of Cuban´s shortsightedness. He always dreamt big, but never had the cap space or roster to entice a superstar. They keep Kyrie now, cause they know he´s a difference maker to convince a Giannis, Jokic or Doncic to join Flagg should they become available. They will acquire some guard like Lavine, tired of losing, and if the big plan comes together, he´ll probably stay on a discount and play the role he was always meant for as 3rd/4th option killer. Nevertheless they also keep all options open to continue the "normal" rebuilding process by adding a 2nd/3rd tier star like Barrett or Herro. That´s why I lost my sh*t when Cuban signed guys like VAJ for 25M, when he could have had Markkanen for that money. Shortsightedness.

I don’t know.  If you believe he had any influence on the outgoing AD trade (that created all of the flexibility we are currently enjoying), then this is just phase two of the Nico purge.  It creates all sorts of flexibility next summer and going forward and Masai can then start to invest in his ‘keepers’ instead of the best he could find on the discard pile of Memphis, Detroit and Atlanta.

I was just thinking this morning if GS would consider trading Curry to Charlotte. Curry said before the only other team he'd consider playing for is Charlotte. Charlotte has a bazillion picks. Reports are Joe Lacob is ready to build for the post Steph Curry era. (That's why I don't think you are getting Yaxel or any major picks from GS in a trade)

Plan powder just doesn't seem like a Masai kind of move.  I'm not saying it wont happen but given his history I don't know that there enough evidence to be this confident.

I think Steph wants to retire as a Warrior and their owner knows it. Now they play cat & mouse. Their owner probably wishes Steph would just retire, so he can start the rebuild. Meanwhile Steph is like: give me another 30M, I´ll never stop and you can´t make me. Big Grin Big Grin

I can see the argument for clearing out the vets to bring back draft capital and make room for the kids, but I would be surprised if free agency is a big part of his plans.  That market is getting more and more limited as extensions become more the norm and in all his years in both Denver and Toronto he has never signed a significant free agent.  He will still be limited in assets and will likely need to continue dumpster diving for the foreseeable future.

It´s not Plan Powder. It would be Plan Powder, if we kept AD, re-signed Middleton and added some washed veterans on multi year deals, then went to Jokic and said want to play here for 20M. It´s simply Plan All Options. They won´t deal Washington/Gafford now, unless it´s a no brainer deal, cause they operate on so many different timelines. Does Toronto say no to a S&T Christie + Aldama for Barrett next summer? I don´t think so, if Barrett wants to play for Masai again.

Kyrie
Barrett
Flagg
Washington
Gafford

is not a bad upgrade to the starting five.

I'd push back on the idea that we'd need to send a pick their way. The Mavs are offering the Warriors a unique opportunity to retool with high quality players for essentially free, on reasonable contracts, with relatively short term money.

The only cost will be Yaxel.

Put it this way, if you told the Warriors pre draft that you'd get PJ+Gafford+Martin and reunite Klay for the 11th pick and Butler, they'd 100% say yes.

Yaxel is a good player, but for the Warriors to bank his future instead of giving Steph one last chance is unlikely.

Sign me up if they take that deal, I just don't think they would.

I think I have landed on either Jrue or Scoot.   Scoot minutes may be limited in Portland and I am sure his agency is not thrilled with that.  Although, they can control his rights for this year and next year.  So it would probably be best for Portland to hold on to him.    I am not sure what I think of him as a player, but I think I would be willing to move one of our wings/big (their choice) for Scoot.

I can understand the resistance of trading for an older player with a big contract with Jrue.   It is fair.    I think I would be fine moving one of wings and another player like Klay who is not in our future.   While we are not a contender, I think Jrue would fit in real well and even things out again.   I am just not sure why a team like Portland who is trying to win would be looking to move him.
