Trade & FA 2023-24: 76ers Believe They Have A Shot at PG13
Dan, I’m pretty staunchly against trading that ‘27 right now, but I have to admit that Claxton is a prize that would tempt me to let go of it. He’s basically the ideal modern defensive center, imho.

I just don’t know why BRK would give him up for Tyler Herro. I wouldn’t if I were in their shoes, but who knows?

people:  Oh yeah Dwight Powell is definitely the starter.  So psyched.  It's too late to make trades.  Only 3.5 months left until opening day.

I'm usually in lock step with @killerleft but this particular issue is seriously blowing my mind.  The only way they dont upgrade center is if they dont want to include Hardy, Green, or the 27 1st and it's impossible to make a move without those assets.

Is there a vet legit starting center that would be available without spending one of those assets?  I'm not aware of one.

If they don't make another move, I anticipate Holmes starting.  If he is anything like he was before the Sacto shit show, then between Holmes, Maxi and Lively developmental minutes there won't anything left for Powell.  Its possible he is our 4th center.

I also feel like Powell has been the fall guy for the massive lack of depth this team has had in the front court since the KP trade, which has never been addressed until this offseason.  We have added Lively, Holmes, Williams and Omax.  We have more options there than we have had in a long time.

I keep going back to Z.Collins. He's a flex F-C who could start with G.Williams now and could also start with Lively eventually. With Wemby in SA, I think he's redundant. What do y'all think it would take to get him?

Can we S/W Holmes? Even going back 2 years ago, the guy isn't a starting NBA player. He's at best an end of the bench player.

For what purpose?  We don't know of any deal that would require that reduction in cap.  I also think looking at stats for a season or two and ignoring all context is probably not the best way to project a player.

I know.  I’m not in love with the Brooklyn part of this (and I’m having them pay a first on top of your concerns).

I will say though that some kind of deal with Brooklyn seems likely and outgoing will be a pick, DFS and some salary.  Claxton and O’Neale are the most likely candidates.  So, in my defense, I was starting from a point that might be fairly similar in my assumption about what Herro to Brooklyn might end up being.  Also, if Claxton is so perfect, then he will be highly valued in the free agent market next summer.  Get something now?  Or, risk losing him for nothing then?

What purpose?  Maybe because we have 3 Cs in Holmes, McGee, and Powell who aren't starting calibre; two rookies in Lively and OMax; an often injured Maxi who played under 1k minutes last year; with G.Williams being our only legit frontcourt starter.

Context is Holmes is so bad that he was moved only in SAC giving up a FRP in OMax.  Holmes << Bertans

If the language says: '27 pick top 5 protected, but if it does not convey it becomes the next available FRP"= that is something the Mavs cannot do unless they get another 2029 pick.

But if it says: "2027 pick top 5 protected." There are no other stipulations, and the Mavs obligations are fulfilled. So the Cavs are essentially guaranteed the pick if the Mavs aren't mega bad, but if they are mega bad they don't get a pick. 2029 isn't affected whatsoever and the Steipien rule hasn't been violated.

It could also say "If it does not convey it becomes future 2nds", that is also is fine.

That is at least my understanding at least. I defer to FGump to fact check me if I've led you astray.

That explanation looks good to me re 2027 protected.

DS has already mentioned the possible inclusion of 2026 for the 1st protected year.

On 2027 protected, I will add that there would be a bit more specificity about what happens "if it does not convey," and that one asset that could be offered when protections do apply could be pick swaps in other years. Those rights have more desirability as a trade asset than we often recognize.

Since it is mostly quiet on the serious rumors front, an update from a less reliable one. Hawks forum is full of KAT to Atlanta happening very soon. Minny looking for savings and picks, so basically expanding the Collins deal with Capela going out to a third team. Houston (they have a standing deal with Atlanta and still cap space) mentioned as most likely third team, although I have no idea why they would need Capela next to Sengun. Seems like a much overpaid back-up.

Dallas was mentioned as the most serious suitor before Atlanta jumped in and Dallas pivoting to GW. I really hope Mavs don't see KAT as legit option. He is just a loser, imho. Before we even come to that horrible contract of his. The alleged offer was Maxi, Bullock, McGee, Green and draft capital.

Siakam seems to be on his way out, with the rumored clash between young and old guys in Toronto. Toronto overplayed their hand, as his highest value was last season. Now he is expiring.

Mavs weakness in any of the deals is, they don't have any more expiring salaries to offer.

I haven’t been mentioning him because I don’t think it’s really possible, but I actually think Siakim is worth coming off one of the young guys and ‘27. Maybe more, if they can free any other draft capital up.

You put Siakim on this team and I believe they’re top 4 in the west. Soooooo much more competent, defensively, and sooooo much more versatile, offensively, than last season.

Slight problem I see is, they really need Green as their on-ball defender. Bullock is already gone and Green is the only option left. Still, if Mavs can get Siakam, you worry about this later.

Just saw this about Hardaway. I wonder what Chicago would have to offer.

"...One reported candidate is guard/forward Tim Hardaway Jr., as we relayed here. Hoops Wire has learned that the Hornets and Bulls are among those with an interest.

Along with re-signing star guard Kyrie Irving, the Mavs agreed to a trade for Celtics forward Grant Williams, sending forward Reggie Bullock to the Spurs. Dallas is also said to remain active in the free agent market, though any further signings are likely to come after the Mavs are done trying to deal."

PJ Washington does not seem dead, does it…interesting.

What else do we think is possible from those teams? Of course, this could be old news. As in, maybe the Hardaway interest was about PJ Washington, but before the Grant Williams choice, and maybe the Mavs kicked around the idea of Vucevic and then moved on? Might be nothing to see here, currently.

Sam Amico (Hoopswire) is reporting that CHA and CHI are the two teams with interest in trading for THJ. Not exactly premium sourcing but give me Caruso or PJW and we’re cooking

Charlotte seems like a odd fit.  Maybe for Hayward? But Hardaway while on a much better contract also has an extra year on it.   Wow...depressing to be a Chicago team.    Not to much to be excited about that franchise anytime soon.  I wonder if Orlando would have an interest.   Maybe Detroit too...but they picked up an option for a similar player already.

I think it’s old news. That’s what makes the most sense to me.

I think Dallas had conversations about PJ prior to signing Williams (not necessarily over, but probably over) and conversations about a sign and trade for Vucevic, who got THJ money (obviously over).

I was checking out a playoff highlight of Paul Reed since his name has been getting tossed around a bunch and while he was not that impressive beyond rebounding, Claxton was having a block party against him.

It could be, but it also means on some level those teams had interest in acquiring him. Something could be revisited.

Dude, Claxton is the real deal. Reminds me of Marcus Camby, who was born about 20 years too early.
