If I was a player agreeing to a deal early in order to be traded to a preferred team, this is exactly the type of clause I would want added. Just think of it as a different form of a no trade clause. Since he's the one signing first, it's insurance against Dallas changing the deal after the ink is dry.
It is tea leaf reading time. As readings go, that’s a pretty good one.
If he wasn’t agreeing to a trade to a specific place, why not sign for a few dollars more than the limit. I think the tea leaves say he’s being moved. What is odd is why wait? Does a specific player need to be available in the draft? Does Kyrie’s number play a role?

Hitting the max for extend-and-trade and securing a trade kicker he can either waive or not waive to block any surprise destinations...these don't feel like coincidental facts.
I think he's pretty overpaid on this deal to be the third best center on a team, but as a STARTER on some other team? Good for all involved, possibly.

As I think about it, my takeaway may have been premature.
FWIW TK's have weird rules. My knee-jerk is how it used to be, when they were always applied and you had to always account for them.
But since one of the CBAs (I think it began in 2011) those rules started getting revised in the new CBA in this way or that, and they can fail to be applied sometimes, in part or in whole, in certain situations. And even when they apply, they are a mess to figure out how much is due, the cap hit, etc (the way to do the cap math can change too). I'm not sure I remember all the exceptions anymore since the 2023 CBA.
There is one scenario when they NEVER apply (but remain as a part of the contract going forward), which is when a player is signing an extension with a TK as part of an extend-and-trade. That would be easy, but there's been no indication whatsoever that this is tied to a trade.

Doesn’t mean he won’t be traded, but I can’t imagine just extending him to trade him 2 weeks later
You never know in this league.

Man, he's just what the Lakers need. I don't know if that's a possibility though.

He'd help them. Ultimately not enough, imho. And, it doesn't feel like they want him badly enough to give up Reeves. Besides Reeves, what else do they have that Dallas would want?

They have a 2031 pick that should belong to us. If I'm doing business with them again, they are overpaying. I'd want that on top of fair value in the swap.

I'm not convinced Dallas wants Reaves. If they did, they'd have him already.

I agree (though I'd want him). But, as you say, it FEELS like he'd have been included in the original deal if they wanted him. Honestly, they should've insisted, if only to flip him.

Interesting that this gets announced the same day that the holiday trade gets announced. Coincidence, or was him being an expiring part of any potential deal with Boston, and they were suddenly informed that Boston was going a different way with holiday?

That's the kind of thing that might get leaked about a month from now.... or longer.
On the other hand, some teams had to get it together before draft night, so it may just be the window of time.
The blessing with the Gafford trade is that we won't see him as a Laker (hopefully). Watching Luka throw him lobs would just be a bridge too far.

Wait until the end of the summer... I Hope Gafford will stay here.
However i don't think Harrison is stupid, he is just corrupt in the Luka trade.

I've said this before, but this is a good place to be.
We hold assets. We're telling trade partners, your "ask" better be a good one. Otherwise we stand pat.

That seems to be Stein's marching orders.

That's true. The Mavs need a mouthpiece and Stein is perfect.
But I get that could be a cover play by the Mavs. They need a megaphone. If it is, it's a good play. I'm all for it. And I'm guessing it's real.
