It looks to me like the NY FO has painted themselves into a corner with no actual plan at all. NTI has been legendary for doing stupid stuff with no perception of the way to work, but when Dolan gets frustrated and starts taking the lead for NY (as he's doing here), the missteps and stupidity always boggle the mind on a level that's beyond belief. He's the GOAT for such things. This time, he wants a better coach than Thibs, so "gotta fire Thibs and get a better coach," without having a clue as to who he can get that would be better.

Now, as this makes no sense, I think some NY media have talked themselves into the what-if's for the Knicks, and want to drive speculation and find reasons to assume some great plan, when it's just Dolan being Dolan. And of course NTI not having the basic skills to navigate pubic perception.

It needs to be mentioned that NY has almost nothing to trade that's worth anything at all. Their draft capital is essentially junk (the leftovers after pick swaps, some of which can't be traded so have to be another swap) and 2nd-rounders, coming from a team that should be a top team in the East each year. And you can't trade a coach in a trade that includes players IN ANY WAY - it's only picks or cash or both.

I don’t understand the opinion that the Mavs handled this poorly. Were they supposed to have a press conference saying they’d shut down any hypothetical ask to interview Kidd? Ok. Then we criticize them for not listening to any potential offer yada yada.

How can you have a takeaway that Kidd is at fault? Even if he was/is leveraging another teams interest in him, to get more years/money, from his current employer, that’s what every coach should do. What every employee would do…

The Knicks are the ones with egg on their face. When they eventually hire a coach, that guy will know he was about tenth on the list.

Well, I don’t think it’s the end of the world at this point, but I guess I just would have preferred whatever it was that Houston did to shut everything down immediately.

I’m honestly not sure if it’s something Kidd did to keep the speculation going or something the Mavs didn’t do, or even if there’s no way they could’ve done things differently. Further, I think they are probably a bit gunshy with talking to the press in any official capacity at the moment, and that has to be taken into account.

It just seems like this has turned into yet another weird situation, that’s all I’m saying.

As a reminder, from Shams last week:

@MavsFilmRoom
Shams says that the Knicks reached out this morning to the Mavs.

He didn’t state specifically what the Mavs said, but he said all three of these teams had swift denials with variations of the teams saying:

“f*** no” and

“no” with an immediate hang up

[Charania] Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka has agreed to a long-term contract extension with the franchise that makes him one of the highest paid NBA coaches, after a 52-win season and top-2 seed for the first time in seven years, sources tell ESPN.

...and now we probably understand what, exactly, Kidd's endgame was/is for his part in this.

It appears that Jason Kidd will be staying with the Mavericks. Despite reports suggesting Kidd and the Knicks had “mutual intrigue,” Mavs president Nico Harrison confirmed in a post-draft press conference that he does not intend to let that happen.

“Is that still out there about J. Kidd? I thought I shut that down,” he said, as relayed by Dallas Morning News writer Brad Townsend (Twitter link).

“He will be the coach next year,” Harrison continued.

Feels like a safe hire. Although, that is supposedly what they were looking for when they missed out on active hired coaches. You know part of the deal was Rick Brunson would stick around. Sounds like they may try to hire Borrego as an assistant coach, but that could get tricky.

Borrego would've been a better choice at head coach, imho.
