I agree that Collins is "available" in the sense that ATL doesn't want to overpay. I'm starting to question whether the obstacles the Mavs have to overcome to sign him are worth it for a player the level of Collins. 

1) Guaranteed max contract for Collins. Already a risky overpay given that he's never made an all-star team and his potential to make one in the future (Im using all-star appearances as a standard of measurement basically saying are you one of the best 25 guys in the league that year?)
2) Having to wait with no assurances he'll even come, tying up your cap. It's basically all or nothing John Collins at that stage and no point of return. I suppose if you're 100% committed to Collins and that plan, then this isn't much of a downfall. But I'm starting to worry more and more having close to 60+ mil tied of the team salary tied up into 2 bigs who's fit isn't seamless.

I get that there is hesitancy on JC. Who he has been TO THIS POINT is not a "max player"...so this is about projection. I think he is one of the easier players to project and see in another situation. Same as many of us projected Brogdon to be a break out player outside of MIL. 

Look, I could be dead wrong on him, but I am SO much more confident on JC than I am on ANY other player in this free agency class working out. I would say all the OTHER suggestions people are making are actually riskier than JC on a max contract.

They DO have agency. The agency to offer JC a max contract OR the agency to make ATL a trade offer "they can't refuse." The Mavs have agency to be aggressive in pursuit...they don't have CONTROL over what ATL chooses to do, but they do have agency to pursue aggressively.

All I'm trying to avoid is a situation that I see creeping up on the horizon where the Mavs decide to not throw all their eggs into the JC sweepstakes, he gets traded elsewhere, and you crucify the Mavs for not going all out. 

Collins is probably the most riskiest free agent out there in terms of actually being able to sign the dude. He's at Kawhi status imo. Except the Hawks are his Uncle Dennis.
Put it this way, I'd rather the Mavs go for more sure things this offseason than to sit and wait 3 days in the hope that ATL doesn't match a max contract where the Mavs have to further bribe them with solid assets like Maxi and DFS to sweeten the pot.

Collins is a GOOD player. He's not worth all that. He's not even close to top 5 in his position. Mavs breaking their backs for a guy like that, no matter how good the fit is, is a shortsighted move.

The max contract is a stumbling block if MC doesn't want to go over the cap, or over the cap much. If not, it's of little consequence. For too long now we have seen MC not willing to go over, that gives me hesitancy on his willingness going forward. I believe he's said he would "pay" for stars, so I assume he's just waiting to go over for the right player. Hopefully we get to see the answer to this soon. I've been in the camp of value contracts for so long because of this, I sometimes have a hard time wrapping my head around overpaying players.

I am out on signing JC or any other player to an offer sheet. Too risky in an off-season that needs to make up for the last two.

There was an expectation that Mosley might become the Mavericks‘ next head coach when Carlisle left for Indiana, but the front office chose Jason Kidd instead.

The off the court questions are very important and they need to answer them.  To be honest though, I hope the conference is not centered on this.

I am more interested in the basketball stuff.   Again, the real world stuff is much more important but I want to hear what has changed with the front office.  How have they not found any lasting pieces in over two years with many avenues available?  Does Nico have full authority to build the roster to his vision?   Cuban said the Cato article was BS, but then things blew up.   Is he not tied into the organization or was he not aware of the dysfunction?   Does the analytics dept report to Cuban or to the GM?  

I want the team to be grilled hard and want to see them give good answers.  Some of those should be the Kidd past stuff, but I am more interested in the basketball failures going back several years (Luka excluded)/

I think it was a smart move to have conference later. This way I would expect most of the heat regarding past actions is already gone by and also the team should be well prepared for any kind of questions related to this. Thats why I think focus will be on basketball. Unlike you I am not really interested in the past (Donnie, RC, past FA failures) and I am sure any questions related to the past will be answered using same PR prepared answers. 

What I am personally interested most are the questions about future. Will there be any hints related to THJ/JB/DFS and others future? Will there be official position on KP? (although I expect it will be something in the lines how KP is most important to this team and crucial building block for the future).

I expect the answer would be "We tried our best but couldn't find a deal worth making. I think this was explained every offseason/TDL" Perhaps a bit more along the lines "times are changing and it is crucial to establish connection with the new generation of players and we believe Nico and Kidd are the best to do it".

Does Nico have full authority to build the roster to his vision?

I think the answer to this was also already given by the boss himself. Cuban is the one making decisions. The rest are his advisors. So the anwser to your question would be something like. "There is not one man who is pulling all the strings. Roster building is a complex process requiring different skills and the whole team contributes to it. The strategy is build in a close tied circle of experts including GM, Finley (whatever his title is), Dirk, analytics, scouting, coach and the boss. We decide what is best."

"The only thing that blew up was media interpretation of things happening. There was no dysfunction. As in every team there were different views how it would be best way to move forward. Donnie and RC are the best and they gave everything to this organization, nothing but respect to them. We all thought it was time to move on after spending together more than a decade of extremely successful partnership, blah, blah, blah...."

I think this is the only question listed where answer would have to be very straightforward. But as in previous question - GM is not the one making final decisions, Cuban is. This was already made clear, imho. That's why the official role of Bob is not really important. He is a person Cuban listens to. He doesn't need an official role to talk to CUban.

They just describe the current situation which is not good, but i don't see it as pessimistic view. It's just facts: 
- If you want use significant cap space on a new player, THJ can not be signed. 
- If JRich opts in, you need to get rid of him to get near max cap space. 
- Brunson/DSJ need to be extended/traded or you risk losing them for nothing as UFA next offseason. 

They do not speculate much on the trade market. A trade can change the situation significantly.

Wow...not sure it would have mattered in the late dirk years, but Iggy had a real nice run in GS.   Might have impacted a championship win for GS too.

The Mavs front office seems like they have so many balls in the air that they confuse themselves.   Last week there was an article on Jae Crowder and how the Mavs indicated they were interested but no firm offer was made.   We were under the impression they gave a one year offer overpaying, but it appears an offer was not even made.    

It seems like the confusion of the front office goes way back before the 2019 offseason.

Andre Igoudala says he was all but signed with the mavs and Cuban asked to press pause as he thought Dwight Howard was available. He says everyone knew Howard was going to Houston but he agreed, then Cuban took so long GS came along and offered
