I hope the Mavs didn’t just piss one away. The one positive for me is that the Mavs must really believe they have a shot this season at something big, otherwise paying an over the hill shooter to sit on your bench in hopes of one more Steve Kerr moment just wouldn’t seem worth it.

Melli's 3 point shooting problems are really odd, because he was an assassin in the Euro league ... his last season he shot 41% on 4 attempts per game. And this was high end competition, he lost to Luka and Real Madrid in the Euroleague Championship (Melli scored 28 in that game).

Don't worry, Redick will take him under his wing and teach him to shoot...wait.

Redick doesn't speak Italian, so he couldn't communicate the shooting technique he taught Lonzo.

What if he teaches Luka about being a wino?

He was never on good NOP teams, and the spacing was always off. Perhaps he just got bad quality looks.
I remember watching that Fenerbache vs. Real Madrid game after we got Luka and Melli looked like a man amongst men. Had no idea he was in the NBA until I saw him in a Pels uniform and thought they got a steal.
Really odd.

The Mavs burn little assets here and there and it SEEMS like no big deal, but they ADD up.
I'm not worried about the 2021 2nd round pick because we don't really have a grade on this year's rookies so having ANOTHER young player would be hard to fit onto the roster

Indeed. When the detail came out that it was 2021 I was more content with the move. It just still frustrates me because the Mavs seem to piss away assets in gimmicky deals like this regularly. They paid a 2nd to get JJ, then when trading him they gave up ANOTHER 2nd.
But yes, this particular asset wouldn't have much use if the Mavs just held onto it.

Say what you want to say about this trade, but JJ is still a very dangerous 3pt shooter. You don't want to leave this guy alone.

I don't mind this deal.
It seems like a low-risk, mid-reward type move. James Johnson and Wes Iwundu weren't going to make much of an impact, if only because they weren't to get on the court, so now we'll take a flyer and see if the Mavs actually got a guy who can dependably make an open shot in their system. Plus whatever Melli may or may not provide. The second round pick was a minor asset, almost worthless.
The Transaction may be a little disappointing, since the Trade Deadline was so hyped, and it's a smallish move. But there's some potential upside to it, and Reddick might well be able to help the team here and there. Also, seems like he plays a style that can be easily integrated into the system -- you don't lose much time while everyone learns a whole new chemistry.
And if it doesn't work, the Mavs just march right on. They don't have to start over or anything.
Given the assets they had, I don't know what prizes they could honestly have come up with. This looks realistic. I can dig it.

And I agree with you. That's why I'm hoping for ORL to buyout OPJ so we can get him on the cheap.
In the tiny chance that OPJ got bought out, signing him to a rest-of-season deal wouldn't create any usable Bird right advantages for re-signing him in the summer.
But ORL has those Bird advantages right now. You would think they might want to re-sign him, or at least get some value in a sign-and-trade via those Bird rights. So why would they buy him out?
I see some people saying this, and I just don't get it.

Really odd.
For sure the Stan Van Gundy offense spearheaded by Eric Bledsoe is no work of basketball art, but might also just have problems lacking the athletic ability to get space for open looks against NBA defenders. Also, I think he's mostly been a garbage time player ... playing essentially the same position as Ingram and Zion ... so are they just chucking up desperation 3s down by 20 in his game situations.

Could possibly trade it at draft time for a 22 second thus having 3 picks to try to move up in that draft. Also might be able to use it and money to move up, or into the first round in this draft, if they see someone they think is a good fit and dropping. It and a player for another player (like the reverse of the Curry/JRich trade).
Not saying it is a big deal, but there are ways to make it more than it is.

In no way does this mean anything now, but I enjoyed going back and watching JJ play in college at Duke. If you are young, you may not know how polarizing a player he was. Man, did people hate him if you didn't like Duke. I think he has admitted he matured a lot since college (don't we all) but a lot of the hate was out of his control.
It is also interesting after four years in college, it took him a good 3 plus years to find a footing in the NBA. A lot of guys have similar stories. It is not always a straight line to success when you enter the league.

Yeah, it's pretty remarkable to see the guy who I thought of as the Duke Spoiled Rich Kid poster boy become this beloved and respected NBA vet. His podcast on The Ringer where he interviews NBA players is pretty good, because he obviously has their respect enough to open up and not just give cliched jock-speak. The one with Jimmy Butler and his falling out in Philly was really good. Butler was really speaking candidly with Redick, and I don't think he suffers fools lightly.
