Highlights of Tyrell Terry this G-League season:

https://www.instagram.com/p/CMH6QRjh4hx/?hl=en

I did not watch any games, just highlights.  so it is tough to get a real good feel.  As I didn't see how he defended or set up others.

As far as negatives, for me his three point shooting was a little disappointing.  33%.   Shooting the further distance and not having much run over the past year is something you need to account for.  Although, if he is going to make a mark in the NBA, he needs to prove to be a great shooter.   The other negative for me is the low assist numbers.   Reading about him prior to the draft, he was suppose to be a pass first kid in his AAU team.  At Stanford, he was one of a few guys who handled the ball.   He will need to continue to improve on running an offense.  Either as the lead guard or a secondary player.   This will require minutes on the court.  Hopefully the Mavs have a strategy to continue to have him improve every day and work him hard, because I doubt he will get many minutes this year.

The positives for me is he is really crafty and creative finishing in the lane.    He will need to continue to work on his body because teams are going to punish him more on drives in the NBA.  Although, this appears to be a really good sign.  Him not being just a guy who shoots but looks to attack can really be helpful once the rest of his game matures.  Another positive is he got a lot of minutes.   Being a young kid and not playing competitive, challenging games over the past year is tough.    So having him get a lot of minutes is a nice sign.

THIS is huge. I figure the three point shooting will come with a little more time, pre-draft I didn't think he would have the size to finish around the rim. I also think the other big development is his willingness to fight on D and take charges. Both of those areas are WAY better than I thought pre-draft.

I like Nate Hinton.   He is not ready yet, but I really hope he has a G-League contract with the Mavs next year.  He is a good guy to work to develop.

I must add that I think Freddie Gillepsie showed well as well.  10 points and 10 rebounds go 2 blocks a game.   He is already 23, but he may have given him the opportunity to win a two way slot next year.   I am a Baylor grad and thought his game was pretty limited for a pro and there wasn't much upside there.  But he had a good showing.   Maybe he is just not quite good enough for the NBA but with the improvement he has shown, it may warrant a two-way slot.

I have watched very little college basketball this year.    Although I was reading Sam Veccinne (athletic) and Jonathan Wasserman (Bleacher report) draft rankings.   It appears people undervalued last years top of the draft, but this years appears to be better up top(but they are still all young).   But at my initial glance, I think I liked last years grouping from the teens to the top 10 picks in the second round more than the names I see this year.  Last years draft got a raw deal imo.

Wellp. Not much going on here lately. Sucks to say this but all parties involved would have been better off by just trading these picks/selections if the kids can’t even get on the court in a game where we sit Luka/KP.

Yep, can't believe the rookie mistakes are so much worse than what the vets displayed last night.

I'd also  say that if Green hasn't differentiated himself from Tyler Bey at this point, I really don't mind using him as a trade piece as the deadline.

Your point being that because an 18th pick isn't clearly ahead of where an early 2nd round selection is, that his future is probably not as great as we might hope?

I think I agree, but I also wonder where on the spectrum of his possible value he is at the moment.

Also if both of them are long term prospects who can't help the Mavs this year, they might be redundant.    Green probably carries the higher trade premium as a Top 20 pick and higher thought among the consensus as a prospect, so he's the most attractive to use as trade leverage.

I'm not sure I agree with this one.

I see Green as more of a Richardson type, guarding 1-3, playing either 2 or 3. I see Bey as a guy who can guard 3-5, probably playing mostly 4.

I will probably never get over the Green pick. The Mavs go with 2nd or 3rd year college players all the time. They usually try to find NBA ready pieces. They had the Brunson-Villanova connection. S. Bey was the logical choice but for some reason the Mavs tried something different and went with the super athletic combine darling. Would love to know why.

Green's trade value is probably the corpse of PJ Tucker or something else insignificant.  I bet the #18 pick had much more value before it was made.

No panic, these rookies are not going to be worth much right now anyway. Best-case is to just give them this freebie season and see where they are at next year.

They are trying to do what the Spurs have done the last 5 years. SA has had a mostly veteran roster with some prospects added every year via non-lottery picks. Djounte Murray, Derrick White, Lonnie Walker took 1-2 seasons before Pop could rely on them. Based on where they were drafted, none of those players really had star potential but now they are all rotation-caliber NBA players.

I think that's what you have to hope the plan is for our rookies. It's not easy to break through in year 1 unless you are playing on a bad team, which was the case for DFS and Brunson's rookie seasons, which gave them the chance to get minutes.

Good take.   My benchmarks for Green are Lonnie Walker(SA), Keldon Johnson (SA) and Mikal Bridges (PHX).  That may be high expectations and he may not reach them but I think Green is similar athlete to those three.  Bridges took about a year and a half to really make a jump.  And that happened after three years at Villanova.   As you mention, the San Antonio players took some time too.  Johnson was playing in the G-league until he made some noise in the bubble.  And Walker has made a jump in year three.  All three of Green, Johnson and Walker were 5 star-ish recruits who came out after their freshman year.   The Spurs track record of developing young players is much better than the Mavs though.

Green and Terry were both future investments.  The Mavs needed to know that.  The draft pick that became both was more valuable than either of them now.   But giving up on both now for pennies is the wrong move.  If neither can play, the Mavs need to re-evaluate how they scout prospects.

I also think Hinton is someone I want to watch closely.  I assume he needs another year in the G-league, but I will be watching his development progress closely.

Currently, you're not wrong. Green still has the chance to change his status in this league, but right now, that pick was way more valuable before it was used. Although, to be fair, the same can be said about a lot of picks.

Let’s face it, Bey is the hope for this draft. Let’s see more of him.

Draft picks are a lot like new cars.

As soon as you drive it off the lot it loses more than 20% of its value.

IF they had picked Saddiq that wouldn't be the case, but it's easy to say in hindsight. If the Mavs make a play for someone good before the TDL like they should, then odds on 1 or 2 of the rookies are gone, with Green almost certainly being the one.
