While we’re here, look for the Pacers to pay a team to take Sumner’s $2.3 million salary, which would allow Indy to fill that roster spot with a healthy player and stay below the tax.
The most promising way out of the tax, I dare say, is to attach Simons’ $3.9 million salary to a future second-round pick at the trade deadline. The only viable alternative is a more major surgery involving one of their top-six players.
