He  is washed up can't defend , can create ,  there are 3 better options than him to start.

 Jackson, Hardaway, or Curry .

He outplayed at least two of them in the preseason and earned his spot. Hardaway had a great preseason as well but is more of a 6th man so it makes sense tos start Lee.
Neither of the mentioned guys is a better defender.
