Especially when there's no upside in giving up.
I personally think Lively going on the block in time for his new team to take advantage of the same remaining runway to see whether or not he's destined for a long NBA career might be worth more than people assume - he's just that talented. But, it's not worth enough to make a material difference on the Mavs' immediate outlook, and it's unlikely to be an improvement over the chances for future benefit when compared to simply playing out the odds with Lively further. I'll say it again, his contract isn't hurting anything. It's getting stuck with the next one that would be a problem if he continues to be unavailable.
There aren't going to find another player quite like Lively - I can promise that.
