I think the part about Kidd's ability to get players to buy in, trust the team/process, play hard, and develop is 100% on target. But around here I think those are regarded as fairly minor qualities compared to various aspects of game management.
And I think when it comes to team building these days, the order of importance is the other way around.
I think those off court relationships, and ability to get players to want to play here and learn to grow, may be the most vital skills needed when trying to build a team from the ashes. They will be missed. He did build TEAMS and PLAYERS.
The game nitpicks? Pffft. The on-court details can be delegated so they shouldn't be an issue. To his credit, he navigated the team through some incredibly choppy front office mistakes, and still getting the team to win big in years that weren't screwed up by upper-level management blunders.
But there is one part that I don't like about Kidd at all. It's the way he jockeyed to try to get the GM job (or some other better job). I think he's a high quality COACH, but his blazing and unending desire to sit in the big chair (rather than keep his focus on his job) is something I don't think will be missed. Did his ambition keep splitting his loyalties between THIS job, and the next step upward he could imagine? Was his allegiance to the welfare of the team (indeed, he should have advised Nico to step away from the Luka trade, but I wonder if Kidd saw it as career suicide for Nico that would then open up the GM for him to grab)? If you aren't sure, you don't want to have to deal with that.
