Perhaps DAR declines his option and opts to be a FA. That seems quite possible, and helpful.
Your idea of Klay for an expiring and a pick would help the numbers, but I don't like that deal itself. Instead, I would search for a deal where Klay is packaged with Martin, Hardy, or DAR, because I'm generally NOT in favor of trading away useful talent to solve bad contracts while still keeping the bad contracts intact. If Klay is the lone outgoing, all you have done is lower your hard to find talent, without solving any of the real problem.
If the Mavs could find a path to shed ALL of Martin, Hardy, and DAR, their remaining payroll would be very palatable. Might even be tax free.
Who is the useful player the Mavs trade away? All things considered Hardy is probably the most useful talent/contract between those four.
Literally the only trade I can think of that will bring anything back to Dallas for Klay is Kuminga. That´s cause GS loves Klay and hates Kuminga.
To every other team in the league Klay is a washed up 35 year old making 16.6M , averaging 11/2/1, shooting 37/36/71. Klay is where he belongs: The NBA retirement franchise. It was temporarily closed for business, but now we are back baby.
