I agree with this.
All of our Mavs fandom has been spent building around guys who can't defend: Dirk, Luka, Brunson, Nash...even Finley before any of them. We're conditioned to think the Mavs can never have enough defenders, and then when the team gets to the 2nd round and beyond, we change the rallying cry to "two-way" players, which is obviously what every team is looking for.
Ironically, what THIS team, being built around Flagg, who is a difference maker on BOTH ends, needs most is SHOOTING, imho. Flagg obviously feels more comfortable as a scorer when he's able to get the ball inside. I think his perimeter game will continue to develop, but right now what would aid in his offensive development is SPACE. The 4/5 chemistry between him and AD is working well. AD isn't a shooter, but is dangerous enough outside of the paint to hold defenders, and has the IQ to know when to keep his distance to clear driving lanes and when to sneak into the dunker spot. It's the other two forwards, Marshall and PJW, who are getting in Flagg's way out there, imo. I think you hold onto ONE of them to backup Flagg and play with him at times, but the other should be changed out for a quick, athletic guy who's more 3/2 than 3/4 or 4/3, and who, above all else, can really shoot. That new guy should be the starter at forward next to Flagg, I think.
I think you need that guy AND a guard.
