The vast majority of this problem flowed from Nico doing the stupid trade for Martin. The difference between not doing that deal (and then Grimes walks as a FA) vs trading for a crippled player on a really bad contract was something like $100M, everything considered. And the cherry on top was that the Mavs paid a pick to be stuck with that bad Martin contract that runs for years, and which buries the Mavs in tax payments. It was GM malpractice of the worst sort.
