Obviously, Wade could be a cheaper replacement for someone headed out, but he could also be expiring salary that gets combined with something later. Either way, if you want to do a consolidation trade, it is good to have excess so that there’s still enough left after the consolidation trade.
Even if it's just about shedding salary in the future and creating a roster spot for Exum, it's probably among the better ways to accomplish that.
