It only became an issue when Jordan went to the league crying about it. We can't have the greatest player of all-time getting pushed around. All those teams played physical back then Boston, Milwaukee, Lakers, Philadelphia, etc. The league almost instantaneously changed the rules of hand checking and physical play. The Last Dance perfectly illustrated it. Detroit use to beat Chicago like a drum knocking them out the playoffs 4 straight times before they finally broke through when age caught up to them, and Chicago improved their roster.. Yet, physicality has returned with some teams even today. It's just not as blatant.
