If I'm running the Knicks, I'm officially going after Rick Carlisle at this point. Perfect storm.
The Pacers' ownership is using the Haliburton injury as an excuse to avoid paying the tax this season. Maybe not the worst idea, actually, but probably not what anyone involved was hoping for, coming off of a finals run. I'm assuming Carlisle isn't thrilled about this coming Indiana season, regardless of where he is on the logic of their approach.
Carlisle is the perfect candidate to get the Brunson/KAT partnership to reach its full potential, offensively, for as much longer as that nucleus lasts. And, he has long wanted to coach Giannis, which matters, because trading KAT for him at the first opportunity seems to be NY's long term strategy.
I would imagine Carlisle is one of the most highly paid coaches right now, given that he's the oldest. I wouldn't be shocked if both he and IND management would welcome a chance to extend their "gap year" to include starting over with a younger, cheaper coach.
Probably won't happen, obviously, but just a thought I had this morning.
