I think it's important to remind ourselves that they DID want to keep Grimes, and in fact offered him a deal. He turned it down, and they apparently didn't see eye to eye with him about either his perceived self-worth, contractually, his role or (probably) both (higher salaries and offensive responsibility tend to go hand in hand). 

Applies to Brunson too.
We know how that turned out.
