It makes far more sense to unload some back-of-the-bench players for the wide variety of middle-of-the-road PG's that have been listed here from time to time.
I see your POV, but here’s a couple of pushbacks:
1) I don’t buy the 2 center/2 forward lineups that are being thrown out around here, so if the plan is for Davis to play a lot of 4, I submit that PJW is highly likely to settle into a role coming off the bench eventually if he stays here in Dallas. That’s really not ideal for him, or for his value as a trade piece.
2) Part of the argument in favor of trading Washington instead of Gafford (for those inclined to go that way) is that he’s worth more. What if the guard they got back was not at a middling level where it was assumed he would go to the bench when Kyrie returned, but an actual bonafide starter who could play with Kyrie in the backcourt?
