Unfortunately it sounds like Sean Sweeney didn’t want to leave and Mavs just didn’t do enough to keep him.

Another Mavs source insists the franchise did in fact try to keep him, but my other source was adamant, as well.

In the end, I’m told, Sweeney viewed the Spurs job as taking on more responsibility, another step to becoming a head coach. Jason Kidd is an established coach with a Finals and 2 conference finals. In that sense, though he loves Dallas, Sweeney had a glass ceiling. It’s more about that than the associate head coach title.
