It's imo about players who have length and play BOTH ENDS of the floor and can play in space and push the pace and are aggressive. Frankly, it looks to me like that is what the Mavs ARE looking for, and have some of, instead of some one-dimensional shoot-a-lot guys.
For example, when healthy, Exum is way closer to fitting that mold than Sexton. IMO B Williams too. They looked for those guys in Klay and AD, Gaff and PJW. Flagg certainly qualifies, in a MAJOR way, fwiw.
I agree that sort of player is what they should be chasing, whether in trade, as a FA, or via the draft.
At best, Sexton is a very expensive bandaid to fill a hole. But it's going back to platoon ball. They can do way better imo (by continuing to look for the right players who play BOTH ends of the floor, and develop them to be better at both ends).
Yes, the model includes other ingredients, but as I said, the Mavs have the other ingredients covered. This is why we think they're contenders, obviously.
But, there are people acting like the guards they have right now are a preferable solution to ANYTHING ELSE, and that's untrue (using hyperbole to make a point here).
I get that you don't like Sexton - I don't think he's all that great, either. But, he's WAY better than Williams (so far) and/or Exum, who has had trouble even staying in the league. I'm not trying to trash either of those guys, who I like, and in Williams' case, the potential is there, sure, but we thought that about Hardy once, too. The sample size of who he is as a player or even a person is miniscule. Planning for him to be good - resting the hopes of a CONTENDER on him being good next year...that's not intelligent. Both of those guys can be right in the appropriate roles, of course...just not "you know, I think we're good at guard, after all" candidates.
I'm NOT arguing for Sexton, specifically. I'm saying that if the current guards are the best they can do BECAUSE they don't want to trade Gafford/PJW, that's stupid. Very, very stupid. They cannot go into the season with Williams or Exum as the starting PG and expect to be taken seriously. Sorry, I think that's just incorrect. You need multiple people who can handle the ball and score. Again, I'm so freaked out about this, I don't think their guard rotation is right even if/when Kyrie comes back!!
