This is where you lose me. I can understand people not wanting to give up Gafford. I also get your desire for more of a two-way player and the critique that Sexton is too expensive. But "at best", he's an efficient scorer in a third guard role who is really good from 3 and can do some self-creation when needed. We have very little creation from the perimeter right now and could really use the outside shooting. Someone who can score 17-18 a game, hit 40% of his 3's AND play D is going to cost you four first rounders and some role players to match their salary (that will be about double what Sexton makes).
What I don't like when I look at Sexton's profile is he is never a plus in On-Court. He's been a plus in On-minus-Off, but that can be about who replaces you when you sit as much as it is about you...especially on a bad team. I dug a little deeper on his splits and one bit of encouragement might come from his profile pre-all star break versus post-all star break the last two seasons. He seems to be a different guy when the team is playing well (or in Utah's case, allowed to play well). But, his On Court just falls apart when the "we're trying" part of the season ends in Utah. Trades are always about projecting what someone might be here versus what they were there. That is why so many people missed how good Dinwiddie might be here that first season he helped get us to the WC Finals. I think Sexton's below average D might be closer to average here. The main factor being that he will have a fantastic back line behind him between Lively, AD and Flagg. I absolutely think his ability to hit an outside shot and create (for himself and others) in a bench role would help our offense (pre and post Kyrie's return).
