Mavs get Herb Jones and #7
NO PElicans get Lively, Christie and OMax
Congrats on constructing something that at least gave me pause (and might also be interesting to NO). Herb Jones doesn't provide the floor spacing we'd like (and need as currently constructed). But, other than that he's really good and miles ahead of Christie. He's not old and fits well with the PJ/Gafford age group. He is just a winner any time he steps on the court and Nico has supposedly tried to get him before.
So, is the spread between Jones/Christie enough to make you risk Lively for #7. That's basically it, right? One thing to factor here is Lively will be on his extension before the big cap room year when Irving/AD presumably fall off. By contrast, #7 and Flagg will still be on their rookie deals. Looking ahead, that is a factor as you retool around Flagg after the next 3 seasons. I'm intrigued by the Illinois PG at #7. I'm not an NBA scout, but it looks like he would fit well beside or instead of Kyrie. So, he checks a box. I could also see drafting Klay's eventual replacement here too.
One thing missing in the deal is we'd need to send out more salary. #7 makes $7.5mm, so probably better for us to send Martin (which also gets rid of his bonus). We can maneuver under the second apron even if Kyrie opts in (and get to the T-MLE if he opts out and takes enough of a discount. So, do I like:
AD Gafford Kai Jones/Powell
Flagg Naji OMax
PJ H. Jones
Klay Exum Hardy
Kyrie Jakucionis Williams
I think I could talk myself into this if I loved someone, but I really like Lively. I guess I'd need to know what was out there in a Gafford deal in order to pick.
