It smacks of politics. Blowing smoke, making false statements, then doubling down on those false statements, or kinda/sorta true statements, such as "defense wins championships". "Who're you going to believe, me, or your lyin' eyes?" No one makes this trade. If you do, you have to be aware of NBA-value of the players involved. Nico did none of that. Like trying to convince others that only he knows the truth, that Mavs fans are living in the upside-down. IF a team makes the trade, you get the biggest haul in NBA history.
Any and all responsible for the trade must be fired immediately to have any hope of placating the fanbase and even that will be an uphill battle. For conspiracy theorists, the only thing that makes sense is there is a league-mandated make-good, and the Mavs are given the 1st pick in the draft.
The trade was so slanted, it looks like it was ordered by the powers-that-be in the NBA. A fair trade would've been to send all Laker assets to the Mavs, and then some. That didn't happen. Sending ignoramuses' to try and justify or explain the unexplainable doesn't cut the mustard with even the casual fan, anywhere in the league.
