I think the FO had Grimes pigeonholed as a small-contract player, and were committed to keeping his minutes and usage low for the event that they still had him in the offseason so they could keep him for cheap. I think the two parties soured more and more on each other as the season wore on.

In any event, Martin was a real D-word for not waiving his trade kicker, if he had any inkling of how that would hurt the Mavs. He's already in Rondo/Tariq Abdul-Wahad territory for me and will have to dig himself out of it.

I think you need to give Martin a chance to play and quit on the team in the playoffs before you put him in Rondo territory. 

I'm not going to blame him for not giving up money in a trade he had no control over. Any team roster building issues stemming from that trade are all on Nico.
