I don't think the scheme of big three plus rookies and minimums would work very well especially when the big three are approximately 100yr old combined, and after missing the playoffs this season probably it'd be hard to attract competent veterans as well.
The Mavs won’t be capped at the first apron. Working through a hypothetical KD deal
This summer it can look something like: Klay, PJW, Gafford, and Martin for Durant. Maybe one of them going to a 3rd team to give the Suns salary relief.
The picks that can, and likely will, be traded are: ‘29 FRP (Lakers), ‘31 FRP. ‘26 & ‘32 FRP Swaps. ‘30 SRP (76ers).
In a deal like that, we assume Kyrie opts out and resigns a longer-term deal, once the Mavs have made their moves. They’d have some spots to fill with only these players under contract.
Kyrie (PO) | ‘25 FRP
Christie | Hardy
KD | Naji
AD | Omax
Lively | Powell (PO)
They’d probably look to bring Exum and/or Dinwiddie back. I think they’ll give Edwards a spot.
They’d need to add 4 players total. Safe to assume a vet Big would be a need and depending on who they select in the draft, they can fill out where needed and have plenty under the second apron to do so.
