The counter argument for the sentence above I think is simple. It is not easy to buy a team, many others want the chance. The expansion itself is also nothing set in stone, only some rumblings that it might happen someday. So no guarantee they would succeed in getting that expansion team if it happens. Mavs were on the table and they took the chance. They would prefer to move that to another location.
I don’t disagree that a team in Vegas makes a LOT of sense for the NBA. So much so that Silver himself has basically already guaranteed them a spot in the upcoming expansion.
The issue is in order to move the Mavericks, you’re going to have to convince 20 other NBA owners that the move from Dallas to Las Vegas makes sense. That is something that is an uphill battle. Dallas as a market in this country is the 4th biggest, behind only New York, LA, and Chicago.
Las Vegas is 40th, behind San Antonio, and Indianapolis. Of course this doesn’t factor in true commercialization with all the casinos and people on vacation in Vegas.. But that alone would not make up a nearly 10 times difference in market size. Plus, you know who won’t buy merchandise for your basketball team? People on vacation from other cities like LA, New York, and Chicago who are already fans of their own basketball team. Merch makes up nearly a third of total revenue for teams, so that is another thing to keep in mind.
Further, even if they manage to convince 2/3rds of owners that it’s in their best interest to give up the 4th biggest market in the country, there are still going to be massive costs associated with the move. Branding, a new stadium, a new practice facility. At some point, it’s just simpler to sell the Mavs now today and use that money to buy an expansion team in Vegas when they offer the bidding in a couple of years.
Again, I know you are in no way advocating or even thinking this is a likely thing. But I wanted to put it all down for anyone actually believing the conspiracy they are trying to tank the team so they can move. It doesn’t make sense anyway you look at it. The most likely explanation is just idiocy. Hanlon’s razor strikes again.
