He has an entertaining style that transcends the NBA and we drafted him. I was prepared to ride or die with him as a fan, no matter how it turned out. He’s the only area athlete like that I can recall except maybe someone like Staubach. I’ll still root for him, like I did Nash when he left but also the Mavs. I have to admit AD and Max just seem like super good dudes the more I get to know them. I hope they’re successful here. But it won’t be the same.
I feel really bad for AD and Max as they'll catch a lot of ire for something out of their control.
I do think there is a tipping point for fans, even the more casual of them, which I believe we are seeing with the Cowboys. When Jerry Jones goes from the butt of a never ending joke to someone despised. Are the Mavs there yet? I'm not sure. Most fans probably weren't plugged into Mark and Donnie's many, many, many blunders after the championship, but they also didn't trade Dirk eight months after the '06 finals. The media landscape has also changed a lot since then and the Luka trade is wildly being heralded as the worst trade in NBA history and maybe one of the worst in all of sports. It will be interesting to see what this does to attendance and merchandise sales if anything at all.
