Right now, Nico made this franchise his, tbh. Only Powell has been here before him.
It reminds me of FC Barcelona under Rossell. He was jealous of the fact that the generational coach and player were bought by the previous president, and was trying his best to undermine them, and even replace them, in order to have any future success only credited to him.
I fear Nico might be the same, and could be one of those with main character syndrome
We have seen the same hubris with the Bulls about organizations winning titles. How did it work out for them? The Knicks are another major market franchise and struggled all these years till recently. Generational talents don’t grow on trees. If this was the limit for this team with Luka you just accept it, pay him the supermax and continue for the next three to five years. Or you make a rally bold move to reset for now and the future with some young stud and a lot of picks.
The Mavs did neither of those. They claim they want to win right now but got a worse player than Luka. Just because he is a two way player doesn’t mean he is better. He is a fit next to Kyrie but this increases the load on Kyrie to create for himself and for others. Luka used to take a lot of the pressure off Kyrie. Plus AD is not the most aggressive guy on the court. .
OTOH if Nico really wanted to go all in , he should have just asked for LeBron instead. At least Bron gives you more of a chance than does AD. Also unlike AD Bron doesn’t need to be constantly motivated to play hard. Again I am not saying we should have got Bron. This whole thing is just garbage and poor negotiation skills from Nico. Maybe he got intimidated by Pelinka or trying hard to get into that circle for his after GM career. .
