Under the current CBA, which is more damaging to your team?
1. Overpay to re-sign your player, or
2. Let him walk for nothing.
In the old days, we’d probably choose to overpay, recognize that we have a negative contract, but one that can be traded for another overpaid player that fits our needs better.
But now?
Those trades are much harder to find and execute than before.
I think I’d argue that it’s better, long-term, to let them walk for nothing.
Age is the biggest factor imho. Can´t overpay for 30+ (or injury-prone/420) players anymore. Butler, Beal, McCollum, Ingram, Middleton. No takers. Lavine rehabbed his value, but the knees will also hurt his value, but at least he´s not immovable anymore.
Butler is completely crazy, if he thinks he´ll get more per year than his age. I think this might be the end for him. Only question how much of his remaining contract Miami will pay and how much they´ll fine away.
