TRADE: Isaiah Roby to OKC | Justin Patton (to be waived) + $800K to DAL
#13
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma City Thunder have traded Justin Patton to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for small forward Isaiah Roby. The Thunder also sent cash considerations to Dallas in the deal. This was first reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic
Roby was the 45th pick of the second round. A three-year letterman at the University of Nebraska, he was drafted by the Detroit Pistons before being moved to the Dallas Mavericks, who relegated him to their G-League affiliate, the Texas Legends.

The 6-foot-8 small forward has appeared in nine games this season with the Legends, averaging nine points and seven rebounds.

Roby suffered from plantar fasciitis in his right foot at the beginning of the G-League season which caused him to miss the majority of the year up to this point.

Roby is in year one of his four year contract. He is scheduled to make $1.5M this season with next year’s contract being fully guaranteed at $1.8M.

Per Bobby Marks of ESPN, Oklahoma City’s tax bill drops from $2.3M prior to the trade to $2M, with the franchise being $801,066 over the threshold.

Oklahoma City could move big contracts — forsake this season — or move a minimal contract — a Deonte Burton-type — and keep going with this playoff push, while getting under the luxury tax.
Of course, prior to the offseason trades of Paul George and Russell Westbrook, the Thunder expected to be a luxury tax team for at least one more season. With the franchise moving in a different direction since July, plans have changed. OKC is not known to make salary dump-moved for the sake of shedding costs.
