Right about now, he is going for something north of the minimum, and if he can’t get that and ends up falling into the Mavs’ price range (minimum), I assume a path to playing time will be the most important thing to him, by far. This would be one of the very worst places for him.
I would not get my hopes up.
Forrest Gump is right, I think. That 14th spot is going to be Morris, and the 15th spot will stay open. And that is probably the right way to go.
However, I suppose there is still a chance that they make a trade that changes things?
Using FGump's numbers:
Apron Room: 3,701,258
Apron Cushion: 1,000,000
MLE remaining: 4,250,571
DSJ would get 2,800,834 for VetMin with 7 years of experience, 2,087,519 of which is paid by the Mavs and the difference, 713,315, the League pays.
At minimum Mavs could use up to 3,701,258 to sign him or maybe even 4,250,571, leaving a $450k cushion below the apron.
In summary the Mavs could pay him 900k more than the minimum or up to 1.45m more with a 450k Apron cushion.
As for role, the Mavs have one PG (Exum) on the bench that can run the offense. Some would argue Hardy is another, but I wouldn't. Given Irving and Exum's injury history I believe there is a role for another PG here. Maybe even sliding Exum down the pecking order. He was a Lindsey guy and fell out of flavor in the playoffs.
