I don't recall if it was Stein or Fischer who said that THJ/Grimes is the beginning of a construct. One of them also said there is a belief Dallas has something in place already to move THJ and keep DJJ. I take that to mean that both sides are now free to deal around some basic construct (hopefully that is THJ/Grimes, but it doesn't have to be).
One of the nice things about the $12mm spread between THJ and Grimes is it gives you flexibility to take back more salary (if other pieces are included) while not hard-capping yourself. For instance, Josh for Bogdan doesn't work as Bogdan makes more than Josh. But make that part of the bigger deal and you are fine. Green/THJ outgoing with Bogdan/Grimes incoming allows you to pay DJJ about $11mm and still have a $1.1mm cushion (with 14 players).
Yesterday I said I thought a THJ/Grimes deal had to be part of something bigger for Detroit. Maybe something bigger is moving up to #1 and Atlanta moving down. Atlanta has a big TPE that helps facilitate things if they want to do a deal in 23/24. Or, you simply wait a few days. Does Ivey and #5 get you to #1? What if the Dallas 2025 is added (plus I'd be adding younger Josh Green for older Bogdan)? If Atlanta trades away either Young or Murray, they are pretty light on guards. Getting Green and Ivey would solve that. Also, Risacher at #1 just isn't very good value for them. I think they could get just as good of a player at #5. Add in whatever they get in a Young (or Murray) trade and Atlanta has retooled rather than tearing it completely down.
For Dallas it is THJ/Green/2025 for Bogdan, Grimes (and you keep DJJ)
Lively, PJ, DJJ, Kyrie, Luka
Gafford, Maxi/OMax, Bogdan, Grimes, Exum
Basically, you spend Green and 2025 to get Bogdan, Grimes and space to keep DJJ. That is an upgrade (and I'm a Green fan). In fact, you might need to send Hardy out in this to give Detroit an Ivey replacement.
