You do have to guarantee enough of his 24-25 salary to make the trade match legal. Same with CP3. They aren’t trading him as an instantly vanishing trade chip. Those don’t exist anymore.
I think the play here is to trade match Shamet for THJ. That gets you about $7.5m under the apron with no cushion. Then you S/W him as others have mentioned. That gets you $14mm under the apron.
If you do the protected 2025 for Washington #26 thing that I’ve brought up before, it costs you $2.6mm to pay for the rookie. But, you were going to need a minimum wage guy at $2.0mm anyway. Now you have $11.5mm left to fund a cushion under the apron and pay DJJ a starting wage of about $10.0-$10.5mm
Edit: You only have to guarantee enough of Shamet’s salary to make the trade legal. So, depending on timing, that might save a few more dollars.
