TDL Archived: The 2nd Rnd Pick Yankee Swap
The below is from Stein…DFS and Dinwiddie for Kyrie.  Makes sense for Brooklyn to ask for that, but it is too much.  Obviously we can propose alternatives that substitute say THJ or Wood for DFS (and many here have).  Another version of making this construct work (assuming we agree this is too much for Kyrie), seek assets back from Brooklyn for the ‘overpay’.  An asset might be their 23 pick.  It might be taking on McGee in addition to DFS and SD.  It might be a small salary guy.

I think there may be some smoke around DFS.  Utah and Miami both have young PF’s and picks.  Maybe DFS is a means to an end where we get a pick that we can combine with things we already have and make a second move.  Yeah, giving up DFS is painful, but maybe the Brooklyn pick and our 2025 gets us in a conversation for someone better.   Maybe DFS/SD/McGee for KI/Yatanabe/Sharpe and 2023?

The Mavericks, sources say, have indeed contemplated the prospect of an Irving trade since last summer, when Irving was rebuffed in his first attempt to secure a long-term deal with the Nets. All indications are that the Mavericks have confidence in Kidd's coaching ability to connect with Irving and Luka Dončić's adaptability to play alongside another ball-dominant guard for the rest of the season ... but there is no evidence yet to suggest that Dallas is prepared to enter into a long-term relationship with Irving. How could any team eagerly do so after the constant chaos in Brooklyn for four seasons running?

It's believed that Brooklyn would covet former Net Spencer Dinwiddie and in-demand swingman Dorian Finney-Smith in a prospective trade with the Mavericks, while Dallas would surely insist on moving off at least one of its longer contracts (Tim Hardaway Jr. or Dāvis Bertāns) in a theoretical Irving deal.

Lets say we live in a perfect fantasy where the Nets can't say no to this semi-realistic heavily Mav favored deal:

Kyrie+2023 FRP for THJ+Bertans

This is quite literally the best case scenario. The pinnacle in realistic deals for the Mavs. Even if the Nets said yes to this I'd run so fast from Irving. I don't see how anyone can look at his last 5 years and think you can win anything with this guy.

Kyrie+2023 1st for SD+THJ/Bertans.

This should be the Mavs counter and I think that is exactly what Stein is hinting at.

In two separate deals if I was GM.

Get a 1st for DFS in one deal.

Get a 1st for taking Kyrie in another.

I'm gonna be sick.

If they give up Green for Kyrie "I Love Documentaries" Irving I'm going to riot.

Even then the Mavs need to say no.

I truly 100% believe Kyrie doesn't belong in the NBA solely because he doesn't actually want to play NBA basketball consistently. He'd rather orate us all about conspiracies and his dislike of Jews.

Mark breaking out his spreadsheet at this moment Smile

Personally it is disappointing we need to hope Kyrie is sane to rescue us.  I had hoped we would be in a much better place in Year 5 of Luka as one of the best players in the world.

Also what is the definition of insanity?  He first wanted out from Lebron.  Bombed in Boston with a team thought to be headed to the next dynasty.  And now the stuff in Brooklyn with a guy who was suppose to be his best friend.

On the other hand, it won’t take him long to learn our offenseSmile.  Also if you squint you can think you may have two of the best guards who can finish in the paint.  With a spread floor that could be impossible to stop.  Until he becomes Kyrie.

I swear I fell into another reality.

I don't see how anyone can stomach getting Kyrie and losing DFS in 1 fell swoop.

They absolutely will, just wait.

I'm already sick. This might be the last straw for me.

Interesting news about a possible Wall waiver. I recall when the NBA world thought the Clipps had gotten a major bargain, in signing him for relative pennies after a buyout, and that he would provide them yet another weapon to add to their overflowing wealth of talent. Who knew?!

Memes and laughter is the only thing getting me through the possibility that Cuban is going to trade for Kyrie.

What's odd about this for me is that Wall didn't look washed when he played. He was still relatively productive. His defense left a lot to be desired, but you can say that about most players nowadays.

What has he done that has made the Clips want to jettison him off so abruptly?

I don´t know what would be worse: Irving agreeing or not agreeing on an extension with a trade.

I think it was six months ago that I said get ready for two 1st round picks for Kyrie Irving, cause it´s the most Mavs move ever.

Maybe it´s a 1st, DFS and Green instead, cause we all know Cuban can´t negotiate worth a crap.

Then Kyrie goes to the Lakers in the summer.

How about:

Saric/Bogdanovic to the Mavs
Crowder/Bullock to the Hawks
Wood to the Suns.

THJ to Cavs
Levert to Mavs

Hayward/Plumlee to Mavs
Dinwiddie/Powell to Hornets

Doncic/Levert
Bogdanovic/Green
DFS/Hayward
Kleber/Bertans
Plumlee/Saric

Now all your contracts are good or expire in 2024 except Bertans.

I think I'd rather trade for a swift kick in the balls than Kyrie.
