Harris is an ok defender, but I don't think a Wood/Harris frontcourt is what you really want defensively.
Isn't this almost identical to what they have been doing, only just (perhaps) a re-label of who is playing what position?
C - Wood, Powell, McGee
PF - Maxi, DFS

Yes, and my point is adding Harris to that mix does not make a ton of sense defensively. As you mentioned, both the Mavs and Philly are trying to compete, so the only reason to make a trade like that is if they are trading players that are better fits on the other team. I don't really see that being the case with Harris, so its hard to see any reason that trade goes down.

So according to Shams the Jazz rejected this framework below.
Jazz receive - John Collins + picks
Suns receive - Malik Beasley, Jarred Vanderbilt
Hawks receive - Jae Crowder, salary filler
If this is accurate the Collins return is even worse than I thought. Count me in on the buy low and try to pair him with Wood. Bullock, Powell and 2 2nds might get it done?

I don't know why any team would even deal with Ainge. Just ignore him and work with other teams.

Because he's got Vanderbilt...you gotta try. That dude is going to be a difference maker at some point very soon.

It's hard to unravel ALL the thinking in that 3-way, but if we sit in the Hawks chair and see what they are doing with Collins, it looks like they'd basically be trading Collins for Crowder (who would be an expiring rental), plus filler that would go away asap. If you will please take him off our hands, then the bulk of the price is that you have to pay him, instead of us.
So if the Mavs were to try to get involved for Collins, it doesn't sound like they should pay much in player talent. But would Cuban have any interest in a deal like that, where the cost is primarily to take a bad contract? I suspect those days are long gone.

Just let someone else overpay for him. I get that he is probably going to be a special player, but very, very unlikely worth whatever Ainge is asking.

Adding Collins' contract to ensure that the luxury tax extends past this year? I'd say you're absolutely right.
Even if they were to do some type of Bullock/Powell structure for Collins, I'd say that means Wood is let out the door this summer for sure.

So is V the available player to target, not Collins?

If this is the case, this is so incredibly frustrating. 1) Because of the Mavs overpaying a bunch of scrubs and having bloated money on the roster and 2) because the Mavs are going to have to eat the luxury tax if they are going to dig themselves out of this roster debacle.

I mean, arguments could be made for either. And, to this point, Vanderbilt has been a little slow to develop on the offense end (showing improvement this year) but he's a special defender in the body type the Mavs don't have with an ideal motor/athletic skillset. Think bigger than DFS, but clearly able to play forward, with a Powell-like motor. Tough, too.

This screams public auction to me. Hawks and Suns probably making very little progress in their separate trade negotiations (with Collins and Crowder/Saric), so Shams is doing them a little favour for future scoop.
If that framework was actually accurate, why not simply trade Crowder/Saric for Collins straight up. Don´t need to involve Utah.

Preaching to the choir, my guy. I would've gone up to the max to try to keep Brunson if it was my money.

Pretty sure PHX doesn't want/need JC at his salary pricepoint.

Yeah, to be totally honest, that proposed deal, if true, kind of makes it seem like nobody really wants Collins.

Bullock / Powell for Collins. If that can be framework of a deal to acquire him, you do it.

Yeah I don't see many teams around the league that would be interested in him at his money.
I would still be all over him.

Correct. Its short sighted as well. The Dinwiddie conversation is going to be the next one. He may not be perfect but are we really going to let him walk without an extension of some kind? Bertans and THJ become far more moveable as time goes on. Even if you cant move them, why not bite the bullet now and let those guys walk in the future to recalibrate the cap sheet.
