2021-2022 AROUND the NBA: GSW Champs [ARCHIVED]
(11-18-2021, 11:21 AM)ItsGoTime Wrote: Not to mention, is Morey really willing to wait out 2 years before trading Simmons if he holds out?

Morey has been relatively successful so far, showing strong will. Simmons blinked first in this standoff by returning to the team. And it is not just Morey losing, it is also Simmons. I think at one point someone will get desperate enough to pull the trigger. Think Minnesota, Sacramento, Portland, New Orleans or someone thinking it is time to go all in with their picks. One of them will open their bag of picks to convince third team to send their good player(s) to Philly.

Kanter is not so easy to dismiss.  Escalation.

I’m personally really enjoying this series of tweets by Kanter. He’s certainly going in hard…

As he should. Since the NBA wanted to portray itself as a league that stood for injustices, it's pretty flippant of them to ignore one of the most heinous atrocities that is going on in the world that one of their biggest partners is partaking in.

Kanter has to keep it up. Throw it in the faces of Lebron and the rest of them that kept trotting out their 2 dollar t-shirts they wore before every game as if that meant something. Every day that passes by it makes them seem more and more hypocritical.

The NBA is a joke and the situation with Morey made me lose a ton of respect for the product.  Much respect to Kanter but he's always been a champion of such causes.

In a culture where black lives have been undervalued for centuries, shirts affirming that black lives do matter aren't meaningless. Not that a t-shirt does what needs to be done, but it does a little. I don't think it matters how much they cost or whether Lebron trots when he wears t-shirts.

HOWEVER...I'm with you that speaking up about atrocities here while not being willing to speak up about atrocities elsewhere can be hypocritical...ESPECIALLY if the motivation is your own profit.

I mean, it's not reasonable to expect every person who speaks up about a particular issue to then make sure to mention all other wrongs currently in progress. BUT...if you refuse to weigh in because mentioning those particular people being abused in that particular country where you do business, because it's bad your for business...then you're doing what so many people have done in being quiet over the centuries about the injustice that you do care about.

As an American, I see no issue with focusing on American issues primarily. I do not agree with the idea that if you dont care about everyone's issues then you can not speak openly about your communities' issues. I do not see that same logic get applied to other tragedies, "if you do not care about every terrorist attack, then you cant complain when America gets attacked" is pretty flawed logic imo

Honestly it's hard to have a nuanced discourse on topics such as these over the internet, but I suppose I'll try.

What you said here mainly hit the nail on the head for me as the crux of the issue. I find it disingenuous that these multi-millionaires that earn 6 figures PER GAME find it appropriate to lecture the country on all it's wrong doings, but are perfectly fine overlooking a horrible atrocity because it'll affect their bottom line.

It makes everything that they tried to stand for seem spurious and shallow last summer, and frankly turns me off of the NBA as a whole.

I think you're missing the fact that the NBA is directly partnered with China, and their relationship alone generates hundreds of millions of dollars for the NBA every year.

That's why this is hypocritical. One of the NBA's biggest partners is directly engaging in concentration camps of an underrepresented minority in China, and the league that has gone out of it's way to brand itself as "for the people" and "woke" has turned a blind eye.

If the NBA wasn't directly benefiting off of this, then yeah, sure, focus on American issues if you really want. That's your choice.

Also, as a favor to others, we should probably take this convo into it's own separate thread/ROTW since we're straying off of pure NBA news.

Thats a fair point with pointing out how the NBA/Nike turns a blind eye towards the atrocities that China is committing. But my issue is more of the grandstanding that is being done like all those complaining are equally championing all of these causes. Kanter had a pro-Isreal post not that long ago, does his concerns extend to Palestinians?

Collin Sexton is out for the year with a knee surgery.  Tough going into a contract year for him.

That was one of the reasons why I hoped the Mavs were aggressive trying to get Jalen signed this offseason.   Sure, he could potentially make more money on the open market, but there is risk involved.   A 3 year contract with a player option for year 4 at the max we could offer could be life changing money for him.  Plus, he could get another big payday in 3 years.   I hope the Mavs were aggressive looking to sign him this offseason.  It may be too late now and with his strong play may just role the dice.  It was a mistake if this was something they decided to wait and see imo.

With Sexton out, Rubio should continue to get a chance to play a lot.  Question, Rubio and Jalen both on the market.   How many team would prefer Rubio or Jalen?    Interesting question.   Jalen is younger and better shooter.   Both play smart basketball.    Rubio better defender and passer (i assume, but haven't watched much of him lately).   I would imagine most teams would be split on who they prefer.   Rubio has really stabilized himself the last few years (mostly on non playoff teams) and has been playing excellent so far this year.  To be honest, I scoffed at some who said we should target him this offseason.   Looking back, I think he would have worked really well here.

I would love Rubio here (BE PREPARED), but there's no question that Brunson will be the hotter commodity as a free agent. Like, no doubt, imo.

Is it too crazy to say that Rubio is the better player today? I don't know. I think I'd rather have Rubio here over Jalen. Brunson is a fantastic player, but Rubio historically has always been a step above what Jalen is currently.

Jalen is undoubtedly a better scorer, especially as a finisher. But Rubio has quietly been a 12ppg scorer the last 5 years, and also brings some veteran playmaking.

Here's an interesting proposition. Would you rather have Rubio+Dragic the next 3 years, or just JB on a 18mil per year contract the next 3 years?
