I think it's really important that we remember this.
No matter how tough times get in Mavs land, we've never had to go through anything remotely close to this, at least not since I've been a fan. I hope we never will. Perspective is good.

I'd say Rondo was worse, not that he was as big a part of the team, but what actually happened...in a playoff game...I'd say that is in the remotely category at least.

Yeah, the Rondo saga was ugly, as was Odom’s time here. No doubt.
But imo, Harden pulling this in Houston would be more like Dirk turning into an asshole overnight. Imagine that, if you can. It’s hard even to picture it, imo.
The closest thing I can remember from my period of fandom is when Don Nelson literally quit as the head coach in the middle of a season. That was bonkers. Nothing like this Houston situation though, imo.

This is a pretty good video documenting the 3 J's and the collapse they had.

So. basically the Mavs should have just traded Jim Jackson early on to keep their core.
Not complaining considering this mess lead to Dirk and Nash duo later

Being a Mavs fan in the 90s was brutal even living in the DFW area at the time...just wearing a Mavs CAP got you laughed at all the time...that was the worst decade for a major sports team in US history...
Josh Green is a top 5 Mavs player...

Great video, thanks.
Brutal stuff for those who had to live through it. Not as bad as it would have been if one of them had actually become their longtime franchise player (like Houston/Harden situation) but still pretty terrible. Worse than I realized, probably. I knew the (fake) Toni Braxton stuff, and I knew about all the coaching changes, but I didn't know they were all such douches.

I've been following the Mavs since the first season and don't remember " when Don Nelson literally quit as the head coach in the middle of a season."

Seriously? I'm pretty shocked anyone doesn't remember this. It's how Avery Johnson became coach! It was a bananas situation. Here's how I remember it:
Nellie never forgave Cuban for not bringing Nash back. He started mailing in the job more and more, and was letting Avery run practices (sometimes not even showing up) in 2005, and the team wasn't doing well. At some point that season, the team got booed at home during a stinker, and over that weekend, Nellie literally just quit.
This is all I could find quickly: The first one has a little bit of PR spin mixed into it.

Kind of glad I wasn't a fan yet.

Really, kind of a testament to how bad things have to get before Cuban fires a HC (or GM). Pretty much takes outright subordination. He's a hands on owner but he's nothing like Donald Sterling/Al Davis/George Steinbrenner/Dan Snyder et al in that regard (looks like Ballmer might be falling into that category). Harkens back to his Bill Simmons interview a few weeks ago when he said never trust what HC candidates tell you in their interviews because they've all studied your team and know exactly what you want to hear.

I don't think it can be overstated how invested the Mavs were in Jim Jackson as the first semblance of an NBA cornerstone player to come to the franchise in God knows for fans to get excited about. Look at the 1986-1991 drafts. As bad as the Mavs wanted Dennis Smith Jr to succeed in 2017, it was that X 100000000 with Jim Jackson. And if people think the Rondo trade was bad, it was nothing compared to the Fat Lever trade.
