I believe DLLS guys, particularly Bobby Karalla, started calling De Larrea “Larry” due to his X handle (Laaarry_14). Karalla and DLLS confirmed yesterday that Sergio was cool with that as an official nickname. LockedOn guys took it and ran with it, too.

Yeah, I don't think anyone here in TX decided this. I'm pretty sure it's a nickname he brought with him from Europe, hence the twitter handle.

And acquiring Jrue means you no longer have significant minutes for DeLarrea (and perhaps Ishchenko) to grow into their potential as quickly as possible. So instead of Jrue, I think they are far more likely to invest those minutes (and whatever it would have cost to acquire Jrue) in working at growing their own Jrue, so to speak.

See, I thought you were the architect of the "structure" and teach-Coop-and-the-other-kids-to-win idea, and that was why you don't trade Kyrie. In terms of strict adherence to the talent quotient factor, I think it's clear that they would move him at the trade deadline, 1) after showing  he's healthy and can still contribute to a winning structure, and 2) prior to any decline in player (as opposed to contract) value due to age and father time. If not at the TDL, then next off-season.

Once again, re: Jrue, it's structure vs. development. Sergio has two major holes in his game that will mean he hurts as much as he helps at first - 1) strength, which will take years unless they give him roids, and, far more importantly, 2) that hideous handle. If he had to play major minutes (say, 20) against NBA competition as a backup point guard, he might average 10 assists and 15 turnovers. It's one of the worst handles I have seen from a professional player in my entire life, much less a point guard. It really is hard to overstate how bad it is. Does he have those Coop-like Neo qualities that he can fix such a major aspect of his game and do it quickly? If he looks like a completely different player in those terms by training camp, great. Overwise, giving him thrown-to-the-wolves minutes from the beginning ***will*** engender losses. And we don't have our pick. Whereas if you give him 20 mpg - or even more - as an off-guard, he is so good at other aspects of his game that he is a plus player, and can probably create opportunities for others by passing (his uber-elite skill) without dribbling.

I like a Kyrie-Sergio starting pairing, or a Sasser-Sergio pairing off the bench. I think a Sergio-Max pairing is a recipe for unwanted losses, unless he miraculously fixes that abominable handle by training camp. I really believe they need another guard. Scoot would be fantastic.

"See, I thought you were the architect of the "structure" and teach-Coop-and-the-other-kids-to-win idea, and that was why you don't trade Kyrie" --- That's true.

I do think the fact that Kyrie is already here (no cost to acquire), and he is already the basketball mentor to much of the team, is incredibly consistent with him being a major part of the teach-Coop-and-the-other-kids-to-win idea. I also think Kyrie will play at an incredibly high level, both leading to wins and also teaching the kids as he goes.

Not sure if Jrue can or does do that at all, but don't need two guys for that anyhow.

I understand you don't think De Larrea is ready to excel, but I think he will quickly to learn how to bring his game up to speed, and there are backup PG minutes available for him to figure it out. Don't you?

I don't know if they got word from the league or what, but Spotrac has changed the payout of Biberovic's $6.0mm.  They now list it as $3.0/$3.0 instead of the progressive version that started at $2,926,829.  It eats up an extra $73k of the MLE leaving $12,044,000

Speaking of numbers, I get the attractiveness of Jrue to Dallas, but if you look at Portland, They seem to be resetting.  They have very little money on the books past two years.  The whole point of the Morant deal wasn't the player.  It was the contract that was shorter than Grant's.  So, I don't see them taking back PJ's money and positionally, they have their starters in Avdija and Camara.  Portland certainly doesn't want Gafford.

To me, if there is a deal to be had, it was be getting Sharpe off the books for something shorter like Naji or Christie.  Oh, and Sharpe fits into our TPE and a trade for a lower dollar player like Naji wouldn't be legal without the TPE.

Can Sharpe play a lick of defense? I get that he's a great slasher, but he can't shoot from outside at all. Would many times over prefer Scoot.

I mean he is being compared to Giannis.  I don't think that is underestimating him.

His handle is not that bad. Come on.

Also he didn’t need a great handle in Spain. I think what impressed me in the last SL is how quickly this kid adjusted his style to match SL. He figured out in the first two games that it was completely different thing altogether than his Spanish league experience and started doing “And-1” sh*t, like off the dribble, 18 foot hook ally-ops all over the court and Luka-Like step back threes.

He went full ghetto on Memphis.

This gives me faith that Larry is going to quickly adjust his game. The dude is watching film on SL opponents (WTF?).

He is talented enough to fix his handle. He has eye hand coordination in spades. Just focus in, learn from Kyrie who has one of the tightest handles in history and go earn your ROTY kid. Wink

Sergio has an huge BBIQ, he will fix a lot of his mistake.

Euroleague talent level is more NBA similar (not same level obviously) than 10 years ago, the best 8 teams in Europe are full of ex NBAers so Sergio player against those guys last year.

Nobody know how good or bad he will be next years, i see a Austin Reaves ceiling (more assistman and less scorer) but even a Danilovic or Rigaudeau is possible.

He is very young and it's a plus but this season will be full of ups and downs so don't overract too much.

A floor of a bigger Jose Calderon wouldn't be the worst outcome for pick 25 in the draft.

I will try my best to give a lay of the land...

Notable free agents:
LeBron (UFA)
Kuminga (UFA)
Watson (RFA)
Mathurin (RFA)
Harden (UFA)
Duren (RFA)
Thybulle (UFA)
Westbrook (UFA)

The Mavs still have a few without contracts as well:
Cisse (RFA / Two-Way QO)
Ishchenko [SRP]
BWill (UFA)
Powell (UFA)

Rumored Vets available in the trade market:
Klay
PJW
Gafford

(15) Current roster -- (3) Two-Way*:

Kyrie | Sergio | Sasser | Nemby
Christie | Klay | Poulakidas*
Flagg | Naji | Tarik | Martin
PJW | Aldama | Lawal* | Smith*
Morez | Gafford | Lively

Space below the Luxury Tax: $16,161,971
Space below A1 (Hard Cap): $23,404,386
MLE remaining: $12,044,000
AD TPE remaining: $21,080,154

Latest intel from Stein is that the Heat are interested in Klay. The obvious salary match candidates there are N. Jovic and/or D. Mitchell.

There will likely be a chain reaction once LeBron decides where he'll go. If CLE (most likely), there's a good chance M. Strus and/or D. Schroder will need to be salary dumped.

Dan is pushing for a Mathurin deal. Cjeter on discord is all in on a Watson SnT. VP on discord is wanting Thybulle. SH likes Westbrook for pennies. I've been on the POR guard(s) idea, mostly Jrue for Klay+Naji.

What does Watson project to be? Is he a PF? Wing? Guard? He is an OG starter pack?

I think the biggest problem with Sergio early on will be managing his TO's. He generally offsets that with high assists, but he's probably getting away with things in SL that won't be there in the regular season. For instance, his lobs have been great. But he's frequently threaded the needle on those over-the-top passes. It's a hair away from a TO. Those plays may not work as well when the season starts.

I love it that he's good at the pick-and-roll now though. The Mavs will have a front line that can take advantage of it.

If you look at his turnovers the problem hasn't been passing. Maybe had one or two bad passes so far. All about his handles. Against the Grizzlies he was called for two offensive fouls because he lost control of the ball and tried to prevent the defender from reaching it. In the second half he was stripped by Boozer. The worst kind of turnover. Basically a guaranteed layup/dunk on the other end.

Aldama, Sasser, the other two whose names I can't spell, all have an opportunity in DAL that might be unique in the league. A team with a young core that needs shoring up in scoring and defense, so if they can contribute in those areas, they'll get minutes.

I'm kind of disappointed that there is going to be a lull after SL, during August and September, until training camp starts. But I am looking forward to seeing how this group develops together. Kyrie, Gafford, Naji and Klay are the OGs, so it will be fun to watch the next generation grow together.

That's training camp time for Cowboys fans.

I wonder who is worth more in a trade, PJW or Aldama?  PJW has 89 million for for 4 years in a bag and Aldama has 17 and a team option next year.  The question isn't who is going to be the better player or fit with the Mavs, but in a trade this season or before the season starts which would get the biggest return.  It is hard for me to see that both will be on the team for the next few years at the combined salary, so I am guessing they really will only have one of the two and move the other at some point.  I will guess Aldama would be the choice on teams in cap trouble and PJW for those that have the space, but just I thought I had today after seeing for the trillionth time that  Klay, PJW, Gafford and Marshall or the only ones mentioned.

I don't know that Aldama and PJ are mutually exclusive, but it definitely seems like one of Gafford/PJ/Aldama needs to go, and I doubt its Aldama given they just paid assets to trade for him.

They're too pathetic to even look forward to anymore. Remember when NO Saints were called the Aints and everyone wore a bag over their head? That's the level to which Jerry has let the Cowboys sink.
