Jason Kidd OUT! Who will be the Mavs' next HC?

Atlanta and Orlando other options???  Houston appears to be the easiest option.  A desperate bucks team is another but that seems like past the breaking point

Atlanta could just decide to draft a PG at 8, Orlando traded all their firsts for Bane. Bucks are looking to move on from Giannis it appears. I doubt anything gets done before the TDL but who knows. Houston definitely seems like they have the most urgency since the clock is ticking on KD.

Thinking about it it would probably be easier to get Smith than Reed.  I agree there are many different variations.    If they didn't want to include Reed, they have some good draft assets as well.

I think the most reasonable approach for both teams is probably Jabari plus FVV for Irving plus Caleb Martin.  FVV is a known quantity by Masai and provides a nice one year bridge for whichever guard you get at #9.  I also like adding his expiring deal from a flexibility standpoint for next summer.  Martin actually makes some sense for Houston's bench.

I like the length and floor spacing Smith would add to Flagg.  I think there is untapped upside there and from a timeline standpoint, he joins Lively, Flagg, Christie and #9 as a full logical starting five of the future.  Eason moves into the starting slot in Houston and Martin takes on the Eason bench role.  It is a downgrade there, but a huge upgrade at PG.  I think this makes a ton of sense for both teams.

I hadn't dug into the picks last night, but I love what Dirknows is selling.  Either of the 2027 picks could be attractive (Phoenix unprotected or BKN swap rights).  I think I'd be happy with the worst of those two.  I don't think there is a path to getting our 2029 pick back.  Didn't that go outright to BKN?  I think they just swapped it as part of another deal.  Could be wrong as I'm still on cup number on.

Hmm. Is there a world where Kidd lands the Orlando job and Kyrie follows? Jalen Suggs+?

This is just a random guy on X, but posting because it's a name that I haven't seen talked about yet.

@Rrlewis2
I wouldn’t sleep on Sarunas Jasikevicius — Masai interviewed him in 2018 & he’s been killin it over in Europe.

Nico wasn't going to fire him, and it was clear the owners were going to default to Nico. Kidd hasn't had anyone scrutinize his job performance for a very long time.

Now suddenly, he can feel it.... and it's unsettling.

We've all had the "new boss paranoia." I can easily see him wanting out and maybe getting a new honeymoon with another team. I can also see Masai signaling that might be a good idea.

Maybe we get some bread crumbs today in Masai's press conference, but I am sure that this was mutual.  Maybe pushed by Kidd.   As you mentioned, Kidd may have had more power than anyone in the organization.  Definitely over the past 6 months, but maybe even when Nico was here.  There is a reason why he was either interested in the GM position or wanted someone he felt comfortable with.   With the latest hires, Kidd was left as just a head coach.   And a head coach who wasn't the new guys hire.   Maybe it could have worked out, but I think Kidd has been doing things his way since coming to Dallas.  It probably would have been a much different experience moving forward.

Moving on from Coop probably hurts but he probably also knows that a pretty big roster change is coming and we are not going to see a real quick turnaround anytime soon.  Now he can either move to another team or take a break for a year.   I think he will have suitors if he wants to coach.

Yeah the FVV/Smith/pick is probably the direction.    FVV would duplicate with Kyrie.  Smith seems like he is weird fit currently.   The negotiation is the pick (s) included.    Would I do it?  Not sure, but I am quite confident a Kyrie trade is going to happen over the next year.  I thought it would be at the trading deadline or next offseason, but maybe that changes if an offer is too good to pass.

There was a report last night about FVV opting out and resigning at a lower AAV with the Rockets. I'll try and find it.

Edit:
The Rockets could restructure Fred VanVleet’s contract this offseason, per @ByVarunShankar

VanVleet has a $25 million player option for next season, which he could decline to “negotiate a new deal with Houston to provide some short-term cap flexibility in exchange for a few additional years of security”

Well, it says "could", so far from being a done deal...

A kyrie could open the floodgates.  IN the package you describe, that would mean PJ would be redundant.    Klay would be on the move.   Marshall?   That could really be the starting point for a pretty crazy offseason.

As of now, I expect Kyrie will be back.  It is definitely something to discuss though.

I think Masai tears it down to the studs, starts from scratch. Remove any links to the previous regime.  We just don't know who gets to stay. That's the $64.00 question.

Not surprising but besides Kidd and Ricardi, it sounds like scouts, coaches and other employees were let go yesterday.

That is a lot.  Fred was playing at a high level before he got injured and he is two years younger than Kyrie.  Smith is a quality young 3&D player who was playing 35 minutes a game.  Not sure that will be a package Houston is willing to give up even without the pick.

Obviously, the new management wants "their guys" in key positions. I can't fault that and have seen it happen in the non-sports business world as well.

My question is who would be considered "their type of guy" as a head coach? The old mantra of "defense wins championships" isn't wrong, but it's not complete either. You still need an efficient offense regardless of how good your defense is, otherwise you only have half of the answer. This focus has hurt DAL before, when Cuban was pissed at Nash after the playoffs and was trying to lowball his offer. Then PHX came in with a "sign now" offer and he was suddenly gone.

Luka's documented defensive lapses are enough to even get LBJ PO'ed, but what he brings on the other end is magical. IDK if you could ever win a Finals with him, but trading him for magic beans and a new "defense first" philosophy gutted everything about DAL. So the team and it's fanbase have spent the last 18 months wandering in the tankathon wasteland.

I said all that, to ask: "what coach is going to embody the philosophy to embed a new culture and grow it to contender status?" I see references to some hardass college types like Hurley, but could he be effective at the pro level dealing with millionaire rookies? Do you need someone who is more in tune with the player development? Do you need more of an Xs and Os strategist? More of a game manager than a game planner?

I like Kidd and thought he did some good things and some not-so-good things, but now the page has turned and it's time for a new chapter. Who's going to write it?

just listening to press conference, it certainly seems like Kyrie isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Whether Jason has a different story but, this definitely sounds like a Masai decision.

From an SI article...

Amazingly, despite Ujiri running teams for 12 seasons and winning an NBA title along the way, Nurse was his only coaching hire—and one made within the franchise. Barring the promotion of Vogel, this is the first true search that Ujiri will lead up as an NBA executive, leaving many open questions about what direction he’ll take.

MacMahon on the Mavericks' coaching search: "(Mavericks president of basketball operations) Masai (Ujiri) is definitely trying to be very buttoned up and and tight-lipped.

"I did inquire with a source familiar with his thinking and I said, 'Hey, would Sean Sweeney's connection with J-Kidd eliminate him as a candidate?' because Sean Sweeney was J-Kidd's right-hand man in Brooklyn, in Milwaukee and then in Dallas. And I was told no, that that wouldn't eliminate him as a candidate, that they would consider him as an individual, not as J-Kidd's right-hand man.

"I don't have at this point a list of candidates. I would say a couple things there: There are names flying ... Masai's track record is not necessarily swinging for big names. It's trying to find the next great coach. You know, he likes discoveries."

So basically none of the insiders have any idea who Masai is looking at for head coach.
